Following on from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884-5) , Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894) became one of Mark Twain's most popular books. Again we meet his world famous characters: Tom Sawyer, Nigger Jim, and Huck Finn together now on a fantastical balloon journey across the Atlantic to meet lions and Bedouins in the Sahara and retrace something of Twain's own expedition to the Holy Land in his best-selling The Innocents Abroad (1869).
In the story, Tom, Huck, and Jim set sail to Africa in a futuristic hot air balloon, where they survive encounters with lions, robbers, and fleas to see some of the world's greatest wonders, including the Pyramids and the Sphinx. Like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, Detective, the story is told using the first-person narrative voice of Huck Finn. It is a sequel, set in the time following the title story of the Tom Sawyer series.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835—April 21, 1910),better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He is most noted for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885).
Me and Jim was for turning around and going back home, but Tom allowed that by the time daylight come, so we could see our way, we would be so far toward England that we might as well go there, and come back in a ship, and have the glory of saying we done it.
"Filled with the folk humor and storytelling charm that have made Tom and Huck so popular for so many decades." —Audiobook News Service, Spring-Summer 2005

Twain's fresh and humorous perspective on hallowed European landmarks lacked reverence for the past-the ancient statues of saints on the Cathedral of Notre Dame are "battered and broken-nosed old fellows" and tour guides "interrupt every dream, every pleasant train of thought, with their tiresome cackling." Equally irreverent about American manners (including his own) as he is about European attitudes, Twain ultimately concludes that, for better&or&worse, "human nature is very much the same all over the world." Mark Twain () was born Samuel Longhorn Clemens in Florida, Missouri, and died in Redding, Connecticut. A satirist, novelist, and keen observer of the American scene, he is one of America's greatest novelists.
Tom Quirk is currently the Catherine Paine Middlebush Professor of English at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The author of several books, he is the editor of Mark Twain's Tales, Speeches, Essays, and Sketches for Penguin Classics. From AudioFile [Editor's Note: The following is a combined review with MYSTERIOUS STRANGER AND OTHER STORIES.]--These two Twain titles were recorded in the mid 1980s. INNOCENTS is an early Twain work, expanding on a jocular series of travel articles he wrote on a Grand Tour of Europe and the Holy Land. Without trying to imitate Twain, narrator Prichard, who has recorded a number of titles by the same author, nicely plays the vigor, lightness, and wit of the original. He has a distinctly middle-aged sound, and the sharpish register of his voice cuts through the technical muddiness of the recording. Kent's voice does not. In STRANGER, we hear almost every edit, and there are many in his rendition of eight Twain short stories. The selection represents the author's entire career from the early, ironic "Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" to the late, bitter "Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg." Kent's excellent diction ensures tha on the down side, his reading is dry.
