星期六，我写了一会儿作业想活动活动，就给我的朋友亮亮打电话，约他到院子里玩。我们先玩了一会儿悠悠球，觉得很无聊。亮亮建议说：“咱们来场骑车比赛吧！”这是个好主意！于是我俩推出自行车开始了比赛。比赛正激烈的时候，我感觉脚下一松，车子坏了，我们停止了比赛。亮亮看了看说：“你的车子掉链子了，我帮你修吧！”我说：“不用了，我回家修吧，再说你也没有工具，怎么修呀？”可是，他神奇地从车筐里拿出了工具，三下五除二就修好了车子。我惊讶地问：“你的工具是从哪里拿的呀？你怎么会修车子？”他笑了笑说：“昨天下午和妈妈去公园，临出家门时掉了链子，我妈妈帮我修好了。我看了看便学会了，工具也就顺手放车筐里了。”我激动地说：“太感谢你了！你可真能干！”说罢，拿出手绢给他擦了擦手。这就是我们班的能人亮亮，他不但学习好，而且动手能力特别强，经常帮助同学修理桌椅。

核心&/h2&&p&我在以前的帖子中说过，与汉语相比，英语非常重视句子结构的严谨，【主谓宾(主系表)】是任何一个句子的基础。无论多么复杂冗长的句子，它&b&有且仅有&/b&一个谓语动词。对于英语的句子结构，申小龙在1998年的著作《中国句型文化》有生动地描写：&/p&&blockquote&1. 英语句子呈「&b&树&/b&」状辅排，即以&b&主语与谓语动词搭配形成形式主轴&/b&，即句子的主干成分。 &br&&br&2. 然后利用各种关联词和介词等把句中的各种短语（介词短语，名词短语），附加成分（同位语，插入语），分词（现在分词分句，独立成分）和从句（定语从句，状语从句，同位语从句）往这根主干上钩搭。&b&犹如一棵枝叶横生的大树，盘根错节&/b&。&/blockquote&&p&&b&任何完整的一个英语句子，无论长短复杂，本质就是一棵树，它有且必有一个主干，即主语+谓语+（宾语）。&/b&&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&申小龙的精辟概括用下图描述：&/p&&figure&&img data-original=&https://pic2.zhimg.com/v2-8bf618eda334a0b7b702db3bafe75319_r.jpg&&&figcaption&英语句子的树形结构&/figcaption&&/figure&&p&说的通俗一点，如果把谓语动词比作老虎，那么英语句子就是【一山不容二虎】，绝对不允许两个（或更多）谓语动词同时存在。这时候，问题就来了：如果表达的意思比较复杂，涉及到了多个动作（动词），那英语是不是就要用多个完整独立的句子来分别表达了？&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&当然不需要，英语没有这么白痴。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&谓语动词是老虎，一山不容二虎。这时候如果句子中需要出现其它动词，这个动词必须被【&b&降级&/b&】，才能和谓语动词同时存在。通常来讲，有以下几种被&b&降级&/b&的方式：&/p&&ol&&li&&b&降为非谓语动词形态&/b&（不定式，现在式，过去式）&/li&&li&&b&从句形态&/b&&/li&&li&&b&从属连词，例如because，although等（&/b&注意：这里不包括并列连词and，but和or。这一点我以后会讲）&/li&&/ol&&p&&br&&/p&&p&【本文首发于我的英语学习公众号：&b&赛门喵Simon&/b&】&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&对应到第一个图，上面1，2，3种办法都让动词变成了树枝的形式，钩搭在【主谓宾】主干上。比如2，定语从句和状语从句的&b&关系连词&/b&（which，that，when，whatever等）都是&b&降级的标志&/b&，其后的从句虽然拥有自己的主谓宾结构，但这个谓语已经被关系连词降级了，例如定语从句：&/p&&blockquote&The data-original=&https://pic2.zhimg.com/v2-fd7a2c133d2a9b062ec8b1_r.jpg&&&figcaption&定语从句&/figcaption&&/figure&&p&我们学从句的时候被关系连词搞的晕头转向，不过从树形结构上来看，却很容易理解。你可以把他们理解为一种&b&降级标记&/b&：&b&从句中的谓语动词被降级，以树枝的形式存在，关系连词是将树枝钩搭在主干上的钩子&/b&。这时候如果漏了关系连词who，句子就会有两个谓语动词同时存在（said和is），违反了一个句子有且仅有一个谓语动词的规则，语法上句子就是错的。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&第3点也是如此，although，because这些从属连词中的&b&从属&/b&二字其实就是&b&降级&/b&的意思，即让其后的句子变成从属关系（树枝）。聪明的你看到这里可能也明白了为什么although和but不能连用，因为这样两个句子都被降级，于是全句没有主干了，语法上就不构成一个完整的句子了。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&hr&&p&&br&&/p&&p&现在回到第1点，本篇帖子的核心——非谓语动词。&/p&&p&如果你打开任意一本语法书，里面会列出非谓语动词可以做的所有句子成分，主语，宾语，定语等等。&/p&&p&在&a data-original=&https://pic4.zhimg.com/v2-015bdafea2ba587d7a55c9b0f836d80f_r.jpg&&&figcaption&名词化的非谓语动词作主语&/figcaption&&/figure&&p&以上两种情况，由于不定式和进行式由动词变成了名词，可充当主语或宾语（表语），因此可以存在于树形结构中的主干中。&/p&&p&除了这两种情况之外，非谓语动词充当的其它成分都是以树枝的形式钩搭在主干上的，如定语，补语，状语等。在意思上，它们对主干提供的信息作补充说明。绝大多数语法书在讲到这部分时，都会按照句子成分来分别给出例句，令很多人都摸不着头脑。其实，个人认为，并不需要关注在句子中的成分，我们只需要牢牢把握住两点就能够准确运用非谓语动词：&/p&&ol&&li&确定非谓语动词的逻辑主语，并确定它们之间是主动还是被动关系；&/li&&li&明确非谓语动词和主干谓语动词之间的时间关系。&/li&&/ol&&p&这两点是准确运用非谓语动词的核心。对于第2点，我会在扩展部分详细解释。我们先把关注放在第1点，无论非谓语动词在句中充当何种成分，它都拥有一个逻辑主语。根据非谓语动词和逻辑主语之间的主被动关系，配合非谓语动词的思维内涵，按照下表选择合适的形式：&/p&&figure&&img world&/i&&/b&。&br&world和change是主动关系，世界正在改变，这里change前置于逻辑主语world。&br&&br&This is a &b&world being changed&/b& by globalization。&br&world和change是被动关系，世界正在被改变，这里change后置于逻辑主语world。&/blockquote&&p&可见，只要确定了逻辑主语，以及它和动词之间的主被动关系，配合思维内涵就可以准确使用非谓语动词。&/p&&p&上面的例子中，无论前置还是后置，逻辑主语和非谓语动词都是紧紧挨在一起的，可有时候不是这样的，我们需要自己确定逻辑主语：&/p&&blockquote&&b&&i&We&/i&&/b& have empty bottles &b&&i&to recycle&/i&&/b&.&br&我们有很多空瓶子要回收。&br&&br&recycle的逻辑主语是We，所以用不定式的主动形式。&br&&br&We have empty &b&&i&bottles&/i&&/b& &b&&i&to be recycled&/i&&/b&.&br&我们有很多空瓶子等着被回收。&br&&br&recycle的逻辑主语是bottles，所以用不定式的被动形式。&/blockquote&&p&那么下面这个句子很多人会认为错了，因为problem和deal with明显是被动关系啊&/p&&blockquote&There is a problem &b&to deal with&/b&.&/blockquote&&p&其实这个句子是对的，只是逻辑主语（sb）被省略了，补全如下：&/p&&blockquote&There is a problem for &b&you to deal with&/b&.&br&you和deal with是主动关系。&/blockquote&&p&当然，这个句子也可以写成&/p&&blockquote&There is a &b&&i&problem to be dealt with&/i&&/b&.&br&这时候逻辑主语就变成了problem。&br&My mother would always buy &b&&i&me&/i&&/b& some toys &b&&i&to play with&/i&&/b&.&br&play with的逻辑主语是me。&/blockquote&&p&通过这些例句，我们应该明白了如何识别非谓语动词的逻辑主语，以及如何确定它们之间主被动关系了。下面我们来看稍微复杂点的情况。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&上面说了，一个句子只能有一个主语+谓语动词，如果要加入另外的动词，就必须通过1，2或3的方式&b&降级&/b&。例如下面的A和B句：&/p&&blockquote&句子A：My colleague has the report.&br&句子B：My colleague teaches English.&/blockquote&&p&两个句子都是【主谓宾】结构，如果要合并，就必须要将其中一个谓语动词降级，我们将B句降级成树枝。&/p&&figure&&img report.&/blockquote&&p&这个句子语法上没有错误，但是外国人很少会这样说，因为略显啰嗦。因此，&b&当定语从句本身较为简单，且只是描述一种状态（teaches）的时候，我们可以将定语从句简化成非谓语动词&/b&：&/p&&blockquote&My colleague teaching English has the report.&br&colleague是teach的逻辑主语，主动关系，由于描述的是现在的状态，所以用现在式。&/blockquote&&p&&b&另外，当定语从句为who+be或which+be的形式时，有时候也可以简化为非谓语动词&/b&：&/p&&blockquote&原句：The first textbook &b&which was written&/b& for English teaching came out in the 16th century.&br&&br&改为：The first textbook &b&written&/b& for English teaching came out in the 16th century.&br&&br&textbook和written是被动关系，并且已经写完，所以用完成式。&/blockquote&&p&除了以上两种情况以外，还有以下几种情况中的从句往往都简化为非谓语动词：&/p&&p&&b&1. 表示原因，并且两个句子主语相同&/b&&/p&&blockquote&句A：I didn't receive any message from her.&br&句B：I gave her a phone call.&/blockquote&&p&以通过从句降级的方式来合并两个句子，句子A通过连词as降级为原因状语从句：&/p&&blockquote&As I didn't receive any message from her, I gave her a phone call.&br&由于我没有收到她任何的消息，我就给她打了电话。&/blockquote&&figure&&img src=&https://pic3.zhimg.com/v2-61d3a9b37c08ecb705f5ad3f807aa58e_b.jpg& data-caption=&& data-size=&normal& data-rawwidth=&1146& &b&&i&I&/i&&/b& gave her a call.&br&没有收到她的消息，我打电话给她了。&br&&br&I是receive的逻辑主语，是主动关系，表明没有收到的状态，所以为进行式的主动形态。&br&&b&&i&Helped&/i&&/b& by local students, &b&&i&we&/i&&/b& spent only an hour to complete the job.&br&有当地学生的帮忙，我们只花了一个小时就完成了工作。&br&&br&we和help是被动关系，工作已经完成，所以用完成态。&/blockquote&&p&&b&2. 表示结果。&/b&&/p&&blockquote&In Sydney the Chinese team got 28 gold medals, &b&who&/b& ranked third of all the competing countries.&/blockquote&&p&who的先行词是the Chinese team，这里可以直接简化为非谓语动词形式&/p&&blockquote&In Sydney &b&&i&the Chinese team&/i&&/b& got 28 gold medals, &b&&i&ranking third of all the competing countries&/i&&/b&.&br&&br&the Chinese team和rank是主动关系，用进行态的主动形式。&/blockquote&&p&注意，当表示结果的时候，逻辑主语有可能是整个句子。&/p&&blockquote&Carbon burns in oxygen or air, &b&&i&forming carbon dioxide.&/i&&/b&&br&&br&form的逻辑主语是前面的整个句子，不仅仅是Carbon。&/blockquote&&p&当然，真实中非谓语动词作状语的情况要更加丰富多样，我就不再这里举例了，因为它们基本的原理都相通。在实际学习中，要不断增加输入量，满满去感受分词作状语的效果。这只能下死功夫。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&h2&Stage III 扩展&/h2&&p&在上一节，我说过学好非谓语动词需要把握两点：&/p&&ol&&li&确定非谓语动词的逻辑主语，并确定它们之间是主动还是被动关系；&/li&&li&明确非谓语动词和主干谓语动词之间的时间关系。&/li&&/ol&&p&第1点我们已经说完了，现在来看第2点。&b&非谓语动词也可以带有时态，但这个时态也被降级了，非谓语动词的时态只是【相对时态】，即和主干谓语动词设立时间参考点的相对时间。&/b&&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&之前表是非谓语动词的一般态，下面的表拓展了完成态和进行态：&/p&&figure&&img Regarding how good your English needs to be when communicating with people like me, that’s all that really matters.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Before going on, I’ll mention that I’m a native English speaker. However, my 2nd language, Mandarin, sucks! It’s terrible. And this is after living and working in China for over 20 years! So I have huge respect for anyone who can learn a 2nd language without even having lived in another country before. Not only is this incredibly impressive to me, it describes millions of Chinese professionals who speak English far better than I speak Mandarin.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Yet, I meet so many people here who lack confidence when communicating with foreigners in English. Their biggest problem is they don’t feel their English is good enough.
But whenever they speak to me, I’m not thinking this at all. In fact, it’s the opposite. In almost every instance, my requirements and standards for their level of English are much lower than what they’re thinking. Or put another way, the English standards in your mind are much higher than what foreigners like me actually need and expect from you. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&I hope the following perspective will help raise your confidence and approach when speaking English with the foreigners in your job and work. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&We’re not nearly as critical of your English as you think! – &/b&Actually, I find that Chinese people are much more critical of each other’s English than we are. For instance, before my staff introduces someone for me that we’re considering to hire, they’ll often say, “We like this candidate, but his English isn’t that good.” But when I interview them, their English is fine. No problem. This is almost always the case. It’s fine to me because I can understand everything they say.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&So here’s the most important thing I’ll say about communicating with a foreigner, especially a foreign manager or executive.
Greater fluency isn’t the key. As long as you can express your thoughts and main point(s) of what you want to say, your accent, grammar, or how slowly you talk doesn’t matter. to me. If you can make yourself understood, that’s good enough.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&I emphasize this point because many people worry too much and get too nervous when speaking to a foreigner. They overthink everything. They think their vocabulary isn’t big enough, they make too many grammar mistakes, their accent is too heavy, or they speak too slowly. But I’m fully aware that English is your 2nd language. I’m not interested in criticizing your language skills. I just want to understand what you want to tell me.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&I’ve been in many meetings where a Chinese person is presenting something to foreign managers or executives.
Not once have I ever heard one say afterwards, “I don’t like his proposal, his accent is too heavy.”
Or, “His grammar isn’t good enough for me to consider his recommendation.”
That’s not even close to what we think or care about.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&What matters to us are that we can understand you, and be understood by you – &/b&What we care about are really just two things:
You can express your thoughts and what you want to say to us, and 2)
You can understand what we’re asking and telling you.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Listen, business communication is very practical. It’s about being understood. What you say doesn’t need to sound beautiful, formal, or highly educated. You don’t need to use big words or fancy sentences. To be understood easily, you actually want to speak in just a simple, straightforward way&b&.&/b& This means using simple, straightforward words and sentences.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&As a foreigner working here, I can also tell you that I make every effort to understand your key points and ideas. In business situations, there’s usually a clear purpose or objective.
It’s to understand a situation, solve a problem, get something approved, etc. It’s not a language contest. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&So I’m always going to do my very best to listen carefully to what you want to say to me. This is the same for every foreigner in China who needs to communicate with non-native, English speakers. Frankly, most of us are terrible at languages. We speak little or no Chinese. So we’re happy about whatever English you can speak to help us do our jobs here well.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&It’s about the quality of your thoughts and ideas – &/b&In addition, what we pay attention to most is what you have to say. As long as it’s something interesting or beneficial, I’m going to give you every chance to say it. When speaking with your boss, your senior management, or a client, it’s the quality of your thoughts and ideas that matter to us.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&One candidate that I interviewed for my career development book, &i&Develop Yourself As A Future Executive, Today&/i&, understood this well. In his job, he often had to communicate with senior managers who were foreigners. For a long time, he would always get very nervous speaking with them. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Finally, he realized that these senior managers weren’t judging what he said by how fluent his English was. They were assessing what he had to say. So if his ideas and thought process were good, then whatever he said would sound good. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&He began providing more facts, references, and background information, which, low and behold, helped make him more easily understood by others. As he focused more on making sure what he said had merit and weight, he became more confident and much less nervous when speaking to others in English. As he put it, “&i&If your thoughts are solid then what you say will be solid too.”&/i&&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&So when determining if a person’s English level is good enough to work for me and our company, I just consider three things. Again, they have little to do with how good you sound. I ask myself these three questions. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&1）Can you reasonably express your thoughts and ideas to me?&/b& – There will be many instances where I need to know what you think about something. For instance, your assessment about a situation, or how you plan to handle something. To let me know, you need to be able to communicate your thoughts to me clearly and simply. You need to be able to share your logic sense and the reasons why what you’re telling me is a good idea, and how you plan to make it happen.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&What I don’t want to do is to play 21 questions with you. I don’t want to have to spend a lot of effort figuring out what’s going through your mind. You need to be able to tell me what’s happening and what you’re thinking. I’m okay if what you say doesn’t sound so smooth, as long as I can understand your key points.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&A Good Tip:&/b& &b&&i&Keep things simple!&/i&&/b& When expressing yourself in English, don’t overthink your words and sentences, or try to sound impressive. In business, keeping things simple and straightforward is always preferred, especially when you’re talking to managers and executives. Again, it’s the quality of your thoughts that impresses others.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&2）Can you accurately understand what I’m saying?&/b& – Perhaps even more critical than how well you can express yourself to me is how well you can understand what I say. I speak at a normal speed. And as an American, I don’t have a heavy accent. However, some of our clients have heavy Indian, British, or Australian accents. So if you can’t understand me very well, I have big concerns about your ability to understand and handle business with some of our clients.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&For me, I need you to understand at least 80% of what I’m saying. Otherwise, there’s going to be too much miscommunication. You’re going to miss important points that I need you to know and details of what I need you to do. This will greatly impact your ability to deliver high quality, accurate work for me and our company.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&A Good Tip:&/b& &b&&i&Record what they say.&/i&&/b& In a meeting or even one-on-one, people in our company will record what I say. I don’t mind this at all. In fact, I like it. It shows their professionalism and desire to catch all my key points, in case they can’t immediately understand everything I say. Listening to what I’ve said later also helps improve their English. It takes more time, but will help you do your job better.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&3）Can you communicate clearly enough in writing&/b&? – Even if you don’t need to speak English
often, in a foreign company it’s likely that most, if not all, of your written communication will be in English. Even for technical and engineering professionals, you’ll often need to correspond by email with overseas colleagues.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&In our interview process, we have candidates write responses to several open questions to help us assess their ability to express their thoughts in writing.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Fortunately, most people write better than they speak in English. Writing is also not a rea-time situation like speaking. When writing, you have the time to think about exactly how you want to say something.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&A Good Tip:&/b& &b&&i&Use available tools. &/i&&/b&These days, there are tools like spell check and grammar check to help you. For some reason, however, many people here don’t use them. But to eliminate and correct many basic mistakes, you just need to run what you write through these tools. The extra 2-3 minutes that this takes will make your written communication look and sound much better.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&So if you’re someone who lacks confidence in your English abilities, they may actually be much better than you think? They may already be good enough to communicate effectively with the foreigners you interact with. Your responses to these three questions can give you a better sense of this, and how much your current level of English really needs to improve.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Of course, improving your English skills is a great investment for your future. The higher you go in a foreign company, the more you need to interact with foreigners. Ultimately, however, fluency is not the key to communicating well with others in English. 核心&/h2&&p&我在以前的帖子中说过，与汉语相比，英语非常重视句子结构的严谨，【主谓宾(主系表)】是任何一个句子的基础。无论多么复杂冗长的句子，它&b&有且仅有&/b&一个谓语动词。对于英语的句子结构，申小龙在1998年的著作《中国句型文化》有生动地描写：&/p&&blockquote&1. 英语句子呈「&b&树&/b&」状辅排，即以&b&主语与谓语动词搭配形成形式主轴&/b&，即句子的主干成分。 &br&&br&2. 然后利用各种关联词和介词等把句中的各种短语（介词短语，名词短语），附加成分（同位语，插入语），分词（现在分词分句，独立成分）和从句（定语从句，状语从句，同位语从句）往这根主干上钩搭。&b&犹如一棵枝叶横生的大树，盘根错节&/b&。&/blockquote&&p&&b&任何完整的一个英语句子，无论长短复杂，本质就是一棵树，它有且必有一个主干，即主语+谓语+（宾语）。&/b&&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&申小龙的精辟概括用下图描述：&/p&&figure&&img data-original=&https://pic2.zhimg.com/v2-8bf618eda334a0b7b702db3bafe75319_r.jpg&&&figcaption&英语句子的树形结构&/figcaption&&/figure&&p&说的通俗一点，如果把谓语动词比作老虎，那么英语句子就是【一山不容二虎】，绝对不允许两个（或更多）谓语动词同时存在。这时候，问题就来了：如果表达的意思比较复杂，涉及到了多个动作（动词），那英语是不是就要用多个完整独立的句子来分别表达了？&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&当然不需要，英语没有这么白痴。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&谓语动词是老虎，一山不容二虎。这时候如果句子中需要出现其它动词，这个动词必须被【&b&降级&/b&】，才能和谓语动词同时存在。通常来讲，有以下几种被&b&降级&/b&的方式：&/p&&ol&&li&&b&降为非谓语动词形态&/b&（不定式，现在式，过去式）&/li&&li&&b&从句形态&/b&&/li&&li&&b&从属连词，例如because，although等（&/b&注意：这里不包括并列连词and，but和or。这一点我以后会讲）&/li&&/ol&&p&&br&&/p&&p&【本文首发于我的英语学习公众号：&b&赛门喵Simon&/b&】&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&对应到第一个图，上面1，2，3种办法都让动词变成了树枝的形式，钩搭在【主谓宾】主干上。比如2，定语从句和状语从句的&b&关系连词&/b&（which，that，when，whatever等）都是&b&降级的标志&/b&，其后的从句虽然拥有自己的主谓宾结构，但这个谓语已经被关系连词降级了，例如定语从句：&/p&&blockquote&The data-original=&https://pic2.zhimg.com/v2-fd7a2c133d2a9b062ec8b1_r.jpg&&&figcaption&定语从句&/figcaption&&/figure&&p&我们学从句的时候被关系连词搞的晕头转向，不过从树形结构上来看，却很容易理解。你可以把他们理解为一种&b&降级标记&/b&：&b&从句中的谓语动词被降级，以树枝的形式存在，关系连词是将树枝钩搭在主干上的钩子&/b&。这时候如果漏了关系连词who，句子就会有两个谓语动词同时存在（said和is），违反了一个句子有且仅有一个谓语动词的规则，语法上句子就是错的。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&第3点也是如此，although，because这些从属连词中的&b&从属&/b&二字其实就是&b&降级&/b&的意思，即让其后的句子变成从属关系（树枝）。聪明的你看到这里可能也明白了为什么although和but不能连用，因为这样两个句子都被降级，于是全句没有主干了，语法上就不构成一个完整的句子了。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&hr&&p&&br&&/p&&p&现在回到第1点，本篇帖子的核心——非谓语动词。&/p&&p&如果你打开任意一本语法书，里面会列出非谓语动词可以做的所有句子成分，主语，宾语，定语等等。&/p&&p&在&a data-original=&https://pic4.zhimg.com/v2-015bdafea2ba587d7a55c9b0f836d80f_r.jpg&&&figcaption&名词化的非谓语动词作主语&/figcaption&&/figure&&p&以上两种情况，由于不定式和进行式由动词变成了名词，可充当主语或宾语（表语），因此可以存在于树形结构中的主干中。&/p&&p&除了这两种情况之外，非谓语动词充当的其它成分都是以树枝的形式钩搭在主干上的，如定语，补语，状语等。在意思上，它们对主干提供的信息作补充说明。绝大多数语法书在讲到这部分时，都会按照句子成分来分别给出例句，令很多人都摸不着头脑。其实，个人认为，并不需要关注在句子中的成分，我们只需要牢牢把握住两点就能够准确运用非谓语动词：&/p&&ol&&li&确定非谓语动词的逻辑主语，并确定它们之间是主动还是被动关系；&/li&&li&明确非谓语动词和主干谓语动词之间的时间关系。&/li&&/ol&&p&这两点是准确运用非谓语动词的核心。对于第2点，我会在扩展部分详细解释。我们先把关注放在第1点，无论非谓语动词在句中充当何种成分，它都拥有一个逻辑主语。根据非谓语动词和逻辑主语之间的主被动关系，配合非谓语动词的思维内涵，按照下表选择合适的形式：&/p&&figure&&img world&/i&&/b&。&br&world和change是主动关系，世界正在改变，这里change前置于逻辑主语world。&br&&br&This is a &b&world being changed&/b& by globalization。&br&world和change是被动关系，世界正在被改变，这里change后置于逻辑主语world。&/blockquote&&p&可见，只要确定了逻辑主语，以及它和动词之间的主被动关系，配合思维内涵就可以准确使用非谓语动词。&/p&&p&上面的例子中，无论前置还是后置，逻辑主语和非谓语动词都是紧紧挨在一起的，可有时候不是这样的，我们需要自己确定逻辑主语：&/p&&blockquote&&b&&i&We&/i&&/b& have empty bottles &b&&i&to recycle&/i&&/b&.&br&我们有很多空瓶子要回收。&br&&br&recycle的逻辑主语是We，所以用不定式的主动形式。&br&&br&We have empty &b&&i&bottles&/i&&/b& &b&&i&to be recycled&/i&&/b&.&br&我们有很多空瓶子等着被回收。&br&&br&recycle的逻辑主语是bottles，所以用不定式的被动形式。&/blockquote&&p&那么下面这个句子很多人会认为错了，因为problem和deal with明显是被动关系啊&/p&&blockquote&There is a problem &b&to deal with&/b&.&/blockquote&&p&其实这个句子是对的，只是逻辑主语（sb）被省略了，补全如下：&/p&&blockquote&There is a problem for &b&you to deal with&/b&.&br&you和deal with是主动关系。&/blockquote&&p&当然，这个句子也可以写成&/p&&blockquote&There is a &b&&i&problem to be dealt with&/i&&/b&.&br&这时候逻辑主语就变成了problem。&br&My mother would always buy &b&&i&me&/i&&/b& some toys &b&&i&to play with&/i&&/b&.&br&play with的逻辑主语是me。&/blockquote&&p&通过这些例句，我们应该明白了如何识别非谓语动词的逻辑主语，以及如何确定它们之间主被动关系了。下面我们来看稍微复杂点的情况。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&上面说了，一个句子只能有一个主语+谓语动词，如果要加入另外的动词，就必须通过1，2或3的方式&b&降级&/b&。例如下面的A和B句：&/p&&blockquote&句子A：My report.&/blockquote&&p&这个句子语法上没有错误，但是外国人很少会这样说，因为略显啰嗦。因此，&b&当定语从句本身较为简单，且只是描述一种状态（teaches）的时候，我们可以将定语从句简化成非谓语动词&/b&：&/p&&blockquote&My colleague teaching English has the report.&br&colleague是teach的逻辑主语，主动关系，由于描述的是现在的状态，所以用现在式。&/blockquote&&p&&b&另外，当定语从句为who+be或which+be的形式时，有时候也可以简化为非谓语动词&/b&：&/p&&blockquote&原句：The first textbook &b&which was written&/b& for English teaching came out in the 16th century.&br&&br&改为：The first textbook &b&written&/b& for English teaching came out in the 16th century.&br&&br&textbook和written是被动关系，并且已经写完，所以用完成式。&/blockquote&&p&除了以上两种情况以外，还有以下几种情况中的从句往往都简化为非谓语动词：&/p&&p&&b&1. 表示原因，并且两个句子主语相同&/b&&/p&&blockquote&句A：I didn't receive any message from her.&br&句B：I gave her a phone call.&/blockquote&&p&以通过从句降级的方式来合并两个句子，句子A通过连词as降级为原因状语从句：&/p&&blockquote&As I didn't receive any message from her, I gave her a phone countries&/i&&/b&.&br&&br&the Chinese team和rank是主动关系，用进行态的主动形式。&/blockquote&&p&注意，当表示结果的时候，逻辑主语有可能是整个句子。&/p&&blockquote&Carbon burns in oxygen or air, &b&&i&forming carbon dioxide.&/i&&/b&&br&&br&form的逻辑主语是前面的整个句子，不仅仅是Carbon。&/blockquote&&p&当然，真实中非谓语动词作状语的情况要更加丰富多样，我就不再这里举例了，因为它们基本的原理都相通。在实际学习中，要不断增加输入量，满满去感受分词作状语的效果。这只能下死功夫。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&h2&Stage III from her, &b&&i&I&/i&&/b& gave her a call.&br&没有收到她的任何消息，我打电话给她了。&/blockquote&&p&严格意义上讲，receive肯定是在give之前，是应该用完成态的。但其实老外一般没有那么严谨，这种说法反而更加普遍一些。所以，除非你是在刻意强调时间的先后顺序，才会将句式写成：&/p&&blockquote&&b&&i&Not &figure&&img src=&https://pic1.zhimg.com/v2-eeeed83a1f4_b.png& data-rawwidth=&1820& data-rawheight=&1372& class=&origin_image zh-lightbox-thumb& width=&1820& data-original=&https://pic1.zhimg.com/v2-eeeed83a1f4_r.png&&&/figure&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&&i&中国人说英语最大的障碍是说的时候想太多&/i&。&/b&反而你英语讲得怎么样，我一点儿都不在乎——这就是这篇文章的主旨。我是一个ABC，同时也是位高管和老板。对我而言，我只关心我能不能听懂你的话，以及你能不能听懂我的话。要想和我这样外国人交谈，英语该达到哪种程度？达到我刚刚说的这种程度就够了。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&我的母语是英语，虽然普通话是我的第一外语，但我的普通话说得很差！而我已经在中国生活、工作了20多年了！因此，对于没出国生活过，却能学好外语的人，我是极为崇拜的。国内成千上百万的白领的英语说得都比我的普通话好多了。这简直不可思议！&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&可是，我碰到过国内许多人，他们在用英语和外国人对话时，往往缺乏自信，他们最大的问题就是觉得自己的英语不够好。但在和他们对话时，我完全不会这么想。事实上，我的想法恰恰相反。几乎每次，我对他们英语水平的要求和标准都远远低于他们自己的标准。也就是说，你对自身英语水平的要求远高于我这种外国人的期待。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&我希望以下观点会帮助你在职场中更自信地用英语与外国人交流。&/p&&p&&b&我们对英语的挑剔程度没你想象的那么高！&/b&我发现中国人比我们外国人还苛求英语水平。但事实上，我们的要求并没有那么高。例如，在我们公司招人时，我手下人会向我介绍候选人：“我们喜欢这个候选人，但他的英语不太好。”但当我面试他们时，我觉得他们英语说得挺好，没啥问题。这种情形经常发生。我一点儿也没受到困扰，因为他们说的我都能懂。&/p&&p&所以，在与外国人，尤其是外国经理或高管沟通时，关键并不在于流利度。只要你能表达想法，有重点，口音重、语法差、讲话慢，这些根本不重要。只要我能听懂你的话，就够了。&/p&&p&之所以强调这一点，是因为许多人在与外国人交流时，往往会担心太多，太紧张。他们爱想太多，觉得自己的词汇量不够大，会犯许多语法错误，口音太重，说得太慢。但我很清楚，对你们而言，英语是门外语。我不会批评你的语言技巧，我只想听懂你想说的话。&/p&&p&我参加过许多次有中国人向外国高管进行展示的会议，在散会后，没有一次听到有人说“我不喜欢这个提案，因为他的口音太重了”，“我不会考虑他的建议，因为他的语法太差了”。我们压根儿就没有这种想法。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&重要的是，我们能明白你的话，你也能明白我们的话。&/b&我们真正关心的事只有两件：&/p&&p&1）你能表达内心想法，并清楚地告诉我们&/p&&p&2）你能理解我们的要求和所说的内容。&/p&&p&商务沟通注重实用性，重点在于人们能理解你说的话。你的英语用不着多优雅、多正式、听上去多有文化，用不着用大词和复杂的句型。相反，想让对方轻松理解你的话，你得用简单、直接的方式进行沟通，也就是说，要用简单的单词和句子。&/p&&p&身为在中国打拼的外国人，我也会使尽全力弄懂你的要点和想法。商务情形往往有个清晰的目的或目标，如了解情形，解决问题，获得批准等等。这不是语言竞赛。&/p&&p&因此，我会尽我所能认真倾听你说的话。中国的每个外国人在与非英语母语人士交流时，都会这么做。老实说，我们大多数人对语言并不在行。我们会的中文很少，甚至几乎没有。所以，无论你英语说的怎么样，只要能帮助我们在中国做好工作，我们都会感到非常高兴。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&注重观点和想法的质量&/b&——此外，我们关注的是你的说话内容。只要你说的内容有趣、有益，我就会让你说个够。在与老板、高层或客户交流时，我们看中的是你观点和想法的质量。&/p&&p&在撰写《Develop Yourself As A Future Executive》这一职业发展书目时，我曾专为这一点采访过一位候选人。他的工作常常需要和外国高管打交道。在很长一段时间，一想到要和他们说话，他就会很紧张。&/p&&p&后来，他意识到，这些高官不介意他英语的流利程度，而在意他的说话内容。如果他有优秀的想法和思想过程，那么无论他英语说得怎样，听上去都很悦耳。&/p&&p&慢慢地，他开始提供更多事实、参考和背景信息，人们变得更容易听懂他的话。他开始注重自内容的质量，确保他们是有益的，有分量的。随后，在用英语与别人交流时，她变得越来越自信，越来越不紧张。正如他所说：“假如你的想法很好，那么你说出来的内容很会很好”。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&因此，在判断一个人的英语够不够在我公司工作时，我只会考虑三件事（再次申明，这三件事与你英语的流利程度几乎毫无关系）。我会问自己这三个问题：&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&1)
你能不能合理表达思想和观点？&/b&许多时候，我需要了解你对某事的想法。例如，你对某一情形有什么看法，你计划该如何处理某件事。因此，你得能清晰、简洁地告知我你的想法，用你的逻辑分析能力告诉我，为什么你的想法是个好想法，以及你要如何实现这一想法。&/p&&p&我不希望再一连问你好几个问题，也不希望要费老大劲，试图弄明白你在想什么。你要能告诉我目前工作进展如何，以及你有什么想法。英语不流畅？没关系，只要我能明白你的要点，就可以了。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&&i&小贴士：保持简洁！&/i&&/b&&/p&&p&在用英语交流时，不要过分考虑该用什么词，什么句型，也别想着怎么说才能让人眼前发亮。商务场合，尤其是高管，往往偏爱简单、直接的表达。再次重申，能让人眼前发亮的是你想法的质量。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&2)
你能不能准确理解我的话？比起表达自己，也许更重要的是你能不能准确理解我的话。&/b&我的语速正常，美国人，也没什么口音。但我的客户有印度人、英国人、澳大利亚人，他们的口音很重。所以，如果你连我的话都听不懂，那我就会担心你能不能理解客户的话，处理好他们的业务了。&/p&&p&对我来说，我需要你对我的话理解程度达到至少80%，不然就会产生太多误会。你会丢掉许多我想让你知道的要点和细节，不能给出高质量、精确的工作表现。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&&i&小贴士：录下他们说的话。&/i&&/b&&/p&&p&在会谈甚至一对一交流时，我公司的员工会把我的话录音。我一点儿也不介意，反而很欣赏这种做法。这体现出他们的职业性，愿意抓住我的关键点，以防不能立马明白我说的所有内容。会后听我的录音还能帮他们提高英语水平。虽然会多花一些时间，但这有助于你的工作。&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&3)

&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Yet, I meet so many people here who lack confidence when communicating with foreigners in English. Their biggest problem is they don’t feel their English is good enough.
But whenever they speak to me, I’m not thinking this at all. In fact, it’s the opposite. In almost every instance, my requirements and standards for their level of English are much lower than what they’re thinking. Or put another way, the English standards in your mind are much higher than what foreigners like me actually need and expect from you. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&I hope the following perspective will help raise your confidence and approach when speaking English with the foreigners in your job and work. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&We’re not nearly as critical of your English as you think! – &/b&Actually, I find that Chinese people are much more critical of each other’s English than we are. For instance, before my staff introduces someone for me that we’re considering to hire, they’ll often say, “We like this candidate, but his English isn’t that good.” But when I interview them, their English is fine. No problem. This is almost always the case. It’s fine to me because I can understand everything they say.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&So here’s the most important thing I’ll say about communicating with a foreigner, especially a foreign manager or executive.
Greater fluency isn’t the key. As long as you can express your thoughts and main point(s) of what you want to say, your accent, grammar, or how slowly you talk doesn’t matter. to me. If you can make yourself understood, that’s good enough.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&I emphasize this point because many people worry too much and get too nervous when speaking to a foreigner. They overthink everything. They think their vocabulary isn’t big enough, they make too many grammar mistakes, their accent is too heavy, or they speak too slowly. But I’m fully aware that English is your 2nd language. I’m not interested in criticizing your language skills. I just want to understand what you want to tell me.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&I’ve been in many meetings where a Chinese person is presenting something to foreign managers or executives.
Not once have I ever heard one say afterwards, “I don’t like his proposal, his accent is too heavy.”
Or, “His grammar isn’t good enough for me to consider his recommendation.”
That’s not even close to what we think or care about.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&What matters to us are that we can understand you, and be understood by you – &/b&What we care about are really just two things:
You can express your thoughts and what you want to say to us, and 2)
You can understand what we’re asking and telling you.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Listen, business communication is very practical. It’s about being understood. What you say doesn’t need to sound beautiful, formal, or highly educated. You don’t need to use big words or fancy sentences. To be understood easily, you actually want to speak in just a simple, straightforward way&b&.&/b& This means using simple, straightforward words and sentences.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&As a foreigner working here, I can also tell you that I make every effort to understand your key points and ideas. In business situations, there’s usually a clear purpose or objective.
It’s to understand a situation, solve a problem, get something approved, etc. It’s not a language contest. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&So I’m always going to do my very best to listen carefully to what you want to say to me. This is the same for every foreigner in China who needs to communicate with non-native, English speakers. Frankly, most of us are terrible at languages. We speak little or no Chinese. So we’re happy about whatever English you can speak to help us do our jobs here well.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&It’s about the quality of your thoughts and ideas – &/b&In addition, what we pay attention to most is what you have to say. As long as it’s something interesting or beneficial, I’m going to give you every chance to say it. When speaking with your boss, your senior management, or a client, it’s the quality of your thoughts and ideas that matter to us.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&One candidate that I interviewed for my career development book, &i&Develop Yourself As A Future Executive, Today&/i&, understood this well. In his job, he often had to communicate with senior managers who were foreigners. For a long time, he would always get very nervous speaking with them. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Finally, he realized that these senior managers weren’t judging what he said by how fluent his English was. They were assessing what he had to say. So if his ideas and thought process were good, then whatever he said would sound good. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&He began providing more facts, references, and background information, which, low and behold, helped make him more easily understood by others. As he focused more on making sure what he said had merit and weight, he became more confident and much less nervous when speaking to others in English. As he put it, “&i&If your thoughts are solid then what you say will be solid too.”&/i&&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&So when determining if a person’s English level is good enough to work for me and our company, I just consider three things. Again, they have little to do with how good you sound. I ask myself these three questions. &/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&1）Can you reasonably express your thoughts and ideas to me?&/b& – There will be many instances where I need to know what you think about something. For instance, your assessment about a situation, or how you plan to handle something. To let me know, you need to be able to communicate your thoughts to me clearly and simply. You need to be able to share your logic sense and the reasons why what you’re telling me is a good idea, and how you plan to make it happen.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&What I don’t want to do is to play 21 questions with you. I don’t want to have to spend a lot of effort figuring out what’s going through your mind. You need to be able to tell me what’s happening and what you’re thinking. I’m okay if what you say doesn’t sound so smooth, as long as I can understand your key points.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&A Good Tip:&/b& &b&&i&Keep things simple!&/i&&/b& When expressing yourself in English, don’t overthink your words and sentences, or try to sound impressive. In business, keeping things simple and straightforward is always preferred, especially when you’re talking to managers and executives. Again, it’s the quality of your thoughts that impresses others.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&2）Can you accurately understand what I’m saying?&/b& – Perhaps even more critical than how well you can express yourself to me is how well you can understand what I say. I speak at a normal speed. And as an American, I don’t have a heavy accent. However, some of our clients have heavy Indian, British, or Australian accents. So if you can’t understand me very well, I have big concerns about your ability to understand and handle business with some of our clients.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&For me, I need you to understand at least 80% of what I’m saying. Otherwise, there’s going to be too much miscommunication. You’re going to miss important points that I need you to know and details of what I need you to do. This will greatly impact your ability to deliver high quality, accurate work for me and our company.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&A Good Tip:&/b& &b&&i&Record what they say.&/i&&/b& In a meeting or even one-on-one, people in our company will record what I say. I don’t mind this at all. In fact, I like it. It shows their professionalism and desire to catch all my key points, in case they can’t immediately understand everything I say. Listening to what I’ve said later also helps improve their English. It takes more time, but will help you do your job better.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&3）Can you communicate clearly enough in writing&/b&? – Even if you don’t need to speak English
often, in a foreign company it’s likely that most, if not all, of your written communication will be in English. Even for technical and engineering professionals, you’ll often need to correspond by email with overseas colleagues.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&In our interview process, we have candidates write responses to several open questions to help us assess their ability to express their thoughts in writing.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Fortunately, most people write better than they speak in English. Writing is also not a rea-time situation like speaking. When writing, you have the time to think about exactly how you want to say something.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&&b&A Good Tip:&/b& &b&&i&Use available tools. &/i&&/b&These days, there are tools like spell check and grammar check to help you. For some reason, however, many people here don’t use them. But to eliminate and correct many basic mistakes, you just need to run what you write through these tools. The extra 2-3 minutes that this takes will make your written communication look and sound much better.&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&So if you’re someone who lacks confidence in your English abilities, they may actually be much better than you think? They may already be good enough to communicate effectively with the foreigners you interact with. Your responses to these three questions can give you a better sense of this, and how much your current level of English really needs to improve.
&/p&&p&&br&&/p&&p&Of course, improving your English skills is a great investment for your future. The higher you go in a foreign company, the more you need to interact with foreigners. Ultimately, however, fluency is not the key to communicating well with others in English.
