关注微信公众号The M.I.A. Backlash, Continued
When M.I.A.鈥檚 debut mixtape, Piracy Funds Terrorism, Volume 1, first debuted back in 2004, I was working as a political reporter-editor in Beirut. I asked a stateside friend to send me a zipped file of the MP3s, which took me more than an hour to download in broadband-less Lebanon. While waiting for the paper鈥檚 front page to close鈥攖here was some late-breaking cabinet shuffle鈥擨 gave the record a first, dizzy spin. It seemed every bit as good as the (mostly Western-derived) Internet media buzz had promised. I burned off a quick copy for the paper鈥檚 music editor, a London-raised kid with family in ritually war-torn South Lebanon, and of course he flipped for it. Piracy鈥攁nd M.I.A. herself鈥攕eemed fully formed, and impossible to improve on via anyone鈥檚 remixing or second-guessing. She鈥檇 taken her own art to the global, cross-pollinated nth degree already, with everything from radical politics to so-DIY-it鈥檚-haute fashion represented and balanced.Which is just a way of noting that sometimes it鈥檚 your moment, and other times it ain鈥檛. Right after Bush 43鈥檚 reelection, almost any beat-savvy rapper-singer with a patina of international awareness seemed a godsend to lefty art obsessives. That M.I.A. (real name Maya Arulpragasam) was a Londoner of Sri Lankan heritage only sweetened the narrative. But now, in 2010, tom brady patriots jersey with President Obama owning both Deepwater Horizon鈥檚 24/7 crude-vomit as well as a lethargic pace on his promised legislative reforms, the pro forma liberal arts-and-culture commentariat has ever so tactfully booted rebel rock from the cool kids鈥?tent. And that may go double if you recently married the heir to the Seagram鈥檚 liquor fortune, as M.I.A. has. (To wit, on one new song, she straightforwardly admits, 鈥淚 don鈥檛 want to talk about money, 鈥檆ause I got it.鈥? So if you鈥檙e presumably in power鈥攐r at least have access to means鈥攁nd not much is getting done, you don鈥檛 even have Brando鈥檚 鈥淲hat you got?鈥?retort to the question of what to fight back against. Which means it鈥檚 a bad time to be an even halfway politically engaged artist coming up on your third record (especially if your second record managed to avoid the sophomore-slump curse).Almost as bad as that is trying to work as a soul-searching pop artist, period. Right now we prefer our dance-music auteurs to keep it simple, conceptually. The thinner the persona, the better. In a recession, minting a strong brand means keeping your job and making bank. It means status鈥攁bout which pop remains unfailingly sensitive. So we鈥檙e talking it to death about Gaga鈥檚 鈥淔ame鈥?trope, The-Dream鈥檚 Love Trilogy, and Lil鈥?Wayne鈥檚 鈥淵oung Money鈥濃?ideas or concepts that boil down to a word or two. The contradictions that may result from such ritual enactments of the duh-simple are fine so long as the artists refuse to engage them in depth. This avoidance equals the 鈥渙n message鈥?discipline of successful politicians, and thus what passes for public-sphere profundity鈥攐r, short of that, winningness. Anything self-consciously complex is anathema. So if The New York Times should goad you into eating 鈥渢ruffle fries鈥?while discussing the developing world? Well, would-be renegade pop artist, that鈥檚 very, very naughty of you (and not in the sexy way). It means you鈥檙e not focused enough as a brand. (The upshot of the reaction to The New York Times Magazine profile of M.I.A. seemed to be 鈥渆ither get your revolutionary politics Camus-grade sophisticated or else don鈥檛 talk about them at all.鈥? It means鈥攇asp鈥攖hat you might even be in a state of active development. So it鈥檚 no surprise that, in an age when simplicity reigns, M.I.A.鈥檚 restless, occasionally exasperating, but never-not-interesting new album, Maya (or, in crypto-computer script, // / Y /鈥?is getting some pans. The raft of critical consensus about Maya is largely correct when it notes that this thing is a mess. But that鈥檚 different from saying that M.I.A. doesn鈥檛 know what she鈥檚 doing. In the past, when M.I.A. built up dense sound collages from foreign-recorded drum circles, she did it under the aegis of great pop tunes鈥攕uch that Jay-Z rightly recognized her 鈥淧aper Planes鈥?as the basis for a chart hit. There was once a yin-yang relationship between M.I.A.鈥檚 top-40 heart and her outr茅 her motto could have been an English remix twist on a foreign phrase鈥攎aybe like 鈥?i&sturm und bang.鈥?Now, though, she鈥檚 off the wholeness bandwagon. The pop songs on Maya鈥攍ike St Louis Rams jerseys 鈥淴XXO鈥濃?are simpler than her past singles. Meantime, the clatter has been fully outsourced to the album tracks鈥攖o the point that, now, getting on her grind actually means sampling power tools in action, with no kind of ear at all for a hook (as on the album鈥檚 second song, 鈥淪teppin鈥?Up鈥?. On other cuts, though, such as 鈥淚t Takes a Muscle鈥?and 鈥淪pace,鈥?M.I.A. flashes an ambition to be a no-nonsense singer. The result doesn鈥檛 just feel like the output of a sonic contrast filter, but instead feels as though M.I.A. has done what Andre 3000 once asked his lover to do, and taken off the pretense of her cool. If having done so makes her less hip, that seems like a useful tradeoff鈥攕o long as the benefit is in becoming less a perfect, walking remix and more of a wart-and-pimpled human. At minimum, despite her recent run of bad press, M.I.A. can鈥檛 be dumb about the fact that her new approach is so violently out of vogue. One of this year鈥檚 most critically adored bands, Sleigh Bells, not only satisfies the zeitgeist鈥檚 desire for simplistic jamming, but also counts M.I.A.鈥檚 label as a recording home. The crunch of the band鈥檚 guitar lines and the distorted stomp of their pep-rally beats are the only things How to Patent the idea that anyone needs to process in order to love them, since the lyrics are mostly free-floating fragments that outright preclude any kind of direct from-artist-to-listener communication. Take this line, for example: 鈥淪traight wars, straight men. Cowboys, Indians. Red souls, red friends. Infinity guitar, you鈥檙e hard.鈥?That Rorschach scramble of refrigerator-magnet poetry comes in a song where only the two-word title phrase, 鈥淚nfinity Guitars,鈥?can be said to matter. The upshot is that it鈥檚 a workable single for both the indie set as well as the yuppies at your local Body Flow class. So while M.I.A. is happy to make money with them鈥攁nd swipe one of their riffs for her own purposes鈥攕he鈥檚 clearly less interested in that 眉ber-studied narrowness herself. (With apologies to Sleigh Bells, she appears to want shards of glass on the ground, not crowns.)Does it all add up to good music? That depends on your appetite for construction鈥攐r else musique concrete-cum-dancing away an identity crisis. (Me, I dig Karlheinz Stockhausen鈥檚 Helicopter String Quartet just as much as I enjoy R. Kelly, so I鈥檓 more or less sold.) The tracks by familiar M.I.A. collaborators (think Diplo and Switch) sound less intriguing this time than the contributions from new partners like Rusko鈥攕uch that I think I鈥檇 like to see M.I.A.鈥檚 next album be completely Diplo-free. But whether you get down with Maya or not, M.I.A.鈥檚 honesty about confusion is at least making one important stand, and that鈥檚 on behalf of music that鈥檚 not buffed down to 鈥渉igh concept鈥?(in the doublespeak of Hollywood) before it even hits your ear. Like most pop artists, she may not be your best source for the latest on the developing world, or theories about what the CIA is actually up to these days, though Maya still asserts itself as sound politics of a different and more musically relevant sort.Page not found - My Useful Blog for Weightlifting

The number one thing that is going to make a poor impression is bad English. Here are the main areas to think about:a)Capitalisation.b)Punctuation.c)Spacing.d)Grammar and tenses.e)Subject-verb agreement.f)Word choice and word forms.g)Spelling.If you don鈥檛 know what the above mean,it鈥檚 quite likely you鈥檙e making a lot of mistakes already!2.This simple piece of advice deserves a number all to itself:Do NOT rely on a computer,Kingsoft dictionary,or software of any kind to 鈥渢ranslate鈥 Chinese into English. The result is a horrible, horrible abomination of English that will send your resum茅 flying straight into the company recycling bin.3.Even if you are a very advanced English user, you are going to make mistakes, because English isn鈥檛 your first language.Make sure you ask a native English speaker to check your resume.I guarantee the proof-reader will make changes, even if you have checked it a hundred times, and they will be able to suggest some improvements of wording to make your language 鈥渟ound鈥 more smooth or impressive. If you don鈥檛 know any foreigners,or anyone who has a friend of a friend who knows a foreigner then鈥?guess you aren鈥檛 living in Shenzhen.4.When you are composing your English version resum茅,don鈥檛 simply translate your Chinese version.Here鈥檚 one basic example:in your Chinese resum茅 you might write a date period as 002/09鈥?004/07鈥 but to an English language reader that looks weird. You should write:鈥淪eptember 2002 鈥 July 2004鈥?Another example:in your Chinese resum茅,you may list your family name separately from your given names (e.g.鈥淔amily Name:Li;鈥 Given Name:George鈥?,and you probably also list your gender (鈥渕ale鈥 / 鈥渇emale鈥?.That鈥檚 not necessary in English, because your first name will tell us whether you鈥檙e a boy or girl (how many boys do you know called Susan?).And there鈥檚 no sense in separating your family name from your given names:just put them side by side:George Li.There are a lot of more complicated ways that translation will lead to problems,so let me repeat:get a native speaker to proof-read your resum茅.5.Be careful about choosing an English name when applying for jobs. This is especially important if your potential employer is from a western country.Don鈥檛 choose 鈥榗ute鈥 names like 鈥淏obo鈥?鈥淔ifi鈥?or 鈥淟ala鈥 unless you think that is the sort of image you want to project.Similarly, don鈥檛 invent names,e.g.鈥淕indrom鈥 or 鈥淏rinty鈥 鈥 in English you are supposed to use names that already exist. And don鈥檛 choose things as your name,e.g.鈥淢ountain鈥?鈥淧encil鈥?鈥淎pple鈥?or 鈥淓mail鈥 鈥 that just sounds stupid in English.I would also recommend avoiding animal names such as 鈥淭iger鈥 and 鈥淓agle鈥 unless you are particularly confident about that. Finally, make sure you have one, consistent spelling for your name, and make sure you know the correct English way to pronounce your name,e.g.鈥淟ily鈥 has a short 鈥榠鈥 (not /i:/ as in 鈥淟isa鈥?and if your name鈥檚 鈥淰ivian鈥 or 鈥淛onathan鈥 make sure you know how to pronounce 鈥榲鈥 and 鈥榯h鈥?As with all my points of advice 鈥 you鈥檇 do best to ask for honest advice from a native English speaker.6.On an English language resum茅,you鈥檙e probably going to say something about your English level.Beware:鈥渇luent鈥 is a very vague word, and probably suggests to an employer that you are close to perfect鈥 unlikely!It鈥檚 better to use an actual qualification to show your language ability,or at least statement of your English level using one of the following words:a)Elementary (- means you can understand a little but can鈥檛 really use English effectively) b)Lower Intermediate (- means you can undersand a wide range of simple English and express yourself in simple ways)Most high school graduates in China are at either elementary or lower intermediate level in their oral English.c)Mid Intermediate (- means you can follow a native speaker鈥檚 speech in normal situations, and can express yourself in some quite full ways) d)Upper Intermediate (- means you can watch English movies or listen to English radio an you can express yourself in most situations, although your language is still not accurate) e)Advanced (- means you can express yourself in a complete way in virtually every situation, although your language often shows limitations, especially of vocabulary) f)Proficient (- means you can use English to the almost same practical standard as a normally-educated native speaker) 7.Formatting鈥 You must format your CV so that it looks good,is easy to read quickly, and highlights the most important information that you want to communicate.It鈥檚 impossible to explain in plain words how to do this well.It鈥檚 like asking what makes a famous painting impressive鈥 you just have to see it.So go online to Google or wherever and search for the words 鈥渞esume formatting examples鈥 and look at some examples of good and bad resum茅s.Remember, your resum茅 is your personal advert, and you鈥檙e competing for attention with a whole pile of other resum茅s.If your resum茅 is hard to read or ugly it will just get tossed in the bin.Not being good with computers is no longer an excuse.It鈥檚 2005:wake up and smell the coffee.I doubt there are any jobs you can apply for out there, except possibly serving fries in McDonald鈥檚,where IT skills - and in particular, word processing skills 鈥 are not a major advantage. If you don鈥檛 know how to use Microsoft Word to format fonts, bullets, tables, borders, and graphics,LEARN!ASAP!8.Writing in the English language?Think about English culture! In English we like our statements to be measured and perhaps a little understated.Do you really want to fill your resum茅 with things like鈥?"I feel happy!" "I am the best!" "I will surprise you!" "I had a good relationship with everyone and never received criticism!" When applying for jobs in any culture,it鈥檚 important to show balance and self-awareness.To my (English) ears the above examples simply show that you love yourself and have no idea of what impression you make on other people.HOWEVER,don鈥檛 fill your English resum茅 with weak words, for example:"good" "nice" "useful" "interesting"(- surely the most boring word in the English language !) If you don鈥檛 know what other words to use鈥 use a thesaurus!Did you know Microsoft Word has a free thesaurus?Right click on any word and select 鈥渟ynonyms鈥 at the bottom of the context menu.(the end)
