1．分析：(whether) its&it。考查从句。whether...or...引导的从句缺主语，exists为谓语动词，它前面的代词为主语，不能用所有格形式的its，应改为it。
2．分析：discourages&encourages。考查语义逻辑。养活更多人，需要更多食物，自然是促进科技的发展，discourage意为&阻止&，意思恰恰相反，故应改成encourages。
3．分析：their&its。考查数的一致。此处代词指代单数意义的organism，不能用复数的their，应用its。
4．分析：son-in-laws&sons-in-law。考查名词复数。合成名词构成复数时通常只将里面所包含的主体名词变为复数，这点同一般名词不同，不是在最后加s。这里，主体名词显然是son。又如：lookers-on，grand-children。如果没有主体名词，就只在最后一个词加上复数词尾，如go-betweens。但由man和woman构成的复合名词，里面所含的成分全都要变成复数，如men-servants。
