基于其分隔于澳洲大陆的地理，八十多年来塔斯马尼亚和澳洲大陆都有固定船班通航。由最早期的，直至1985年塔州政府旗下的TT-Line购买了开抵和的船只「Abel Tasman」。1993年换上更大的「塔斯马尼亚精神号」（Spirt of Tasmania），并于1998年试验租用国际双体船公司的船只增加服务和补充空缺。
2002年，以故前州长占姆．培根下的塔斯马尼亚政府从希腊买来两航经过翻新的，取名「塔斯马尼亚精神一号」（Spirit of Tasmania I）和「塔斯马尼亚二号」（Spirit of Tasmania II），加频两岸通船。新政策显著地刺激了当地旅游业发展和经济增长。自此每晚都有开通－二地的船，并于旺季加驶日间航班。
两艘新渡轮开行后，面对高度需求，州政府遂于2003年宣布再购入「塔斯马尼亚精神三号」（Spirit of Tasmania III），与其姊妹船同型但体积略为小一点，三号主通至的航线。然而，陆续来自的竞争使州政府在2006年宣布中止该船的运作。
塔斯马尼亚的主要机场是和斯塞士顿机场。两城之间并无直通商业航班。飞抵的地点包括悉尼、墨尔本（Tullamarine）、墨尔本（Avalon）、，视乎航空公司和所在机场而定。
服务塔斯马尼亚的航空公司包括、（属澳洲航空旗下）、（属旗下）、，以及塔斯航空（Tasair）和塔斯马尼亚航空（Airlines of Tasmania），后二者主要是飞航附近岛屿和偏远地带的航线。
