Mark Cuban, Donnie Nelson and the Dallas Mavericks got it right when they drafted Satnam Singh Bhamara, the 7’2”, 290-pound behemoth center from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. When Dallas used the 52nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft on Satnam, he became the first Indian born player to be drafted in the NBA. The reality is: Satnam might not be ready to play for the next three or four years. He is a long-term project for Dallas, or for that matter, any other NBA team who could have drafted him. However, Dallas believes that with Satnam’s incredible work ethic, raw talent, and with the skill of their coaches and the basketball operations staff, Satnam can be molded into a powerful NBA player. He will need to work on his athleticism, particularly his lateral movement, however if he meets his true potential, he could be huge (literally!) for the Mavericks just a couple of years from now. Nineteen-year-old Satnam hails from the tiny village of Ballo Ke, population seven hundred, located in the Punjab state of India. He grew up without cable television and basketball courts, however, he had a 7’2” father who loved basketball, and a 6’9” grandmother who supported his hobby. By age twelve, he was sent to a government-funded basketball academy. By age fourteen, Satnam towered over most at 7’0”, and had earned the ironic nickname of “Chhotu”, the Punjabi word for “Little One”. It was at this academy that he was discovered by the NBA, and subsequently sent to the IMG Basketball Academy in Florida.This past year Sim Bhullar (7’5”, 360-pound center) became the first person of Indian descent to play in the NBA when he played for the Sacramento Kings. However, Sim Bhullar is actually from Toronto, Canada, with parents of Indian origin. Satnam is the first player born on the Indian subcontinent to be drafted in the NBA. With a sizeable Indian-American community calling Dallas home, this could be a very successful marketing ploy by the Dallas Mavericks. According to Troy Justice at the NBA, “Satnam could one day do the same thing for India that Yao Ming did in China -- put the spotlight on basketball through an entire country.” Although Satnam’s long-term future in the NBA isn’t totally clear just yet, one thing is evident: in drafting this young Punjabi hulk, the NBA has unlocked a potential untapped market of over one billion people for the league and its owners!
