stop的基本意思是“停止,止住”,指动作、运动、活动或某项进程的中止,或运动中的物体的中止,有短期或突然停止的意味。引申可表示“逗留; 休息”“填塞,阻塞(道路)”“阻止,拦住”“拒绝给予或允许,止付,扣留”等。
stop可用作及物动词,也可用作不及物动词。用作及物动词时,接名词、代词、动名词或what从句作宾语,用动名词作宾语时其前可加名词、代词的属格或宾格表示动名词的逻辑主体。

1.在指某种状态或活动的结束时, stop和cease可以互换。
2.stop是这几个词当中概念最广泛,使用最多、最普通的词。cease的概念较窄,语气较严肃,是正式用语。discontinue也是正式用语。
3.stop既可指运动或行为的迅速中断,又可指某种状态或活动的结束；cease主要指某种状态或活动的结束或不复存在；discontinue则指长期存在着的习惯或习惯性的活动中止了；halt指骤然有力地终止。

We stayed up until midnight talking about our work.我们谈论工作一直到深夜还没睡。
