Google offers clearer search labels日 19:20Google has agreed to alter its search results in the light of a European investigation into whether it unfairly promoted its own services. The firm said that it will more clearly label results from YouTube, Google Maps and its other sites. It also agreed to display links to rivals close to where it displayed its own services on its results page.EU regulators are asking for feedback and have proposed that the concessions be tested for a month. If the European Commission accepts them, they will become legally binding for the next five years. As part of the agreement, Google will clearly separate promoted links from other web search results as well as displaying links to three specialised search rivals &close to its own services in a place that is clearly visible to users&.&The objective of this process is to try to see if we can achieve a settled outcome in this antitrust investigation,& said Commission spokesman Antoine Colombani. But the Microsoft-backed lobby group Initiative for a Competitive Marketplace (Icomp) was not convinced the changes went far enough.&It is clear that mere labelling is not any kind of solution to the competition concerns that have been identified. Google should implement the same ranking policy to all websites,& it said.It added it would comment further once it had fully evaluated the proposals.Dominant in EuropeOther concessions being offered by Google include:To offer all websites the option to opt out from the use of all their content in Google's search services, while ensuring that any opt-out does not &unduly& affect the sites' ranking in its general resultsTo offer specialised search sites which focus on product search or local search the option to mark certain categories of information so that they are not indexed or used by GoogleTo no longer include in its agreements with publishers any written or unwritten obligations that would require them to source online search advertisements exclusively from GoogleTo no longer restrict advertisers from running search advertising campaigns across rival ad platformsAn earlier US Federal Trade Commission investigation into how Google displayed links to its services concluded there was no competition issue.Explaining why it took a different view the Commission said: &Bing and Yahoo represent a substantial alternative to Google in web searches in the USA; their combined market share is around 30%. In contrast, Google has been holding market shares well above 90% in most European countries.&&The way Google presents its web search results therefore has a much more significant impact on users and on the competitive process in Europe than it does in the USA.&BBC © 2013
Memorial for DNA pioneer Crick日 1:17A memorial to DNA pioneer Francis Crick has been unveiled at his former college at the University of Cambridge.Attending the ceremony at Gonville and Caius was Dr James Watson, the man who shared the 1962 Nobel Prize with Crick for revealing the structure of DNA.The engraved stonework, which depicts the double-helix structure of DNA, was unveiled exactly 60 years after the pair's seminal paper was published.Their discovery has been hailed as one of the greatest in scientific history.Crick's and Watson's groundbreaking work was published in the journal Nature on 25 April 1953.Before the structure of DNA was unscrambled no-one had a clear idea how genetic replication - one of the cornerstones of life - worked.'Something enormous'At the unveiling, in front of friends, colleagues and family, Dr Watson paid glowing tribute to his colleague, who died in 2004.The 85-year-old American, who went on to direct the US arm of the Human Genome Project from 1988 to 1992, said: &Francis was the brightest person I ever interacted with.&I met the great physicist [Richard] Feynman but I didn't understand what he was doing, so it didn't mean anything. Francis I could talk to.&It was one of the most important papers ever published and we sort of knew that when it came out.&I haven't lived the last 60 years thinking I'm a celebrity or my name would be put on the same par with [Charles] Darwin, but if I think about it I have to say, 'Yes, we did something big'.&Sir Alan Fersht, master of Caius College, said: &It's roughly equivalent to the theory of relativity, discovering the laws of gravity and it's the keystone of modern biology.&They realised they'd done something enormous, but I'm not sure if they realised how important it has been in practical terms.&The men's work earned them the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962, which they shared with Maurice Wilkins from King's College London.Rosalind Franklin also played a key role in the discovery of DNA but died in 1958, before the prize was awarded.BBC © 2013
US economic growth reaches 2.5%日 3:21Strong consumer spending helped the US economy grow in the first quarterThe US economy grew at an annual rate of 2.5% in the first three months of the year, helped by the strongest consumer spending figures in two years. While the growth figure was lower than analysts' expectations, it was better than the 0.4% rate recorded in the final quarter of last year.Consumer spending rose at an annualised rate of 3.2%, according to the Commerce Department data. But government spending, especially on defence, fell at a rate of 4.1%.'Sharp softening'Consumer spending accounts for more than two-thirds of US economic activity, and the 3.2% rise during the first quarter is the fastest rate since the fourth quarter of 2010. It grew at a pace of 1.8% in the fourth quarter of last year. Home construction also rose further. However, there is concern among economists that recent employment and retail sales data suggests spending is slowing. The larger-than-expected fall in government spending was one reason why the GDP came in below analysts' forecasts. On 1 March, more than $85bn in mandatory government spending cuts, known as the sequester, began. The defence sector was due to bear the brunt of the cuts.ING economist Rob Carnell said a breakdown of the figures showed &sharp softening& in growth as of March, indicating further weakening over April and May.He said there was a good chance of the second quarter being &substantially weaker& with a &rogue negative quarter& even possible.Maintain QE?But Dan Greenhaus, managing director at BTIG, was hopeful of an improvement later in the year.&We have observed some positives that suggest growth will pick up in the back half of the year, but the US economy still struggles to accelerate in a sustainable fashion,'' he said. The figures could renew calls for the Federal Reserve to maintain its monetary stimulus programme of quantitative easing. The central bank meets next week and it is widely predicted that it will stick to its $85bn-a-month bond-buying schedule. The GDP figures received a muted response on Wall Street, with the main Dow Jones index ending little changed, up just 12 points or 0.08% at 14,713.The US economy has now grown for 15 consecutive quarters. However, since the recession officially ended in June 2009 growth has remained weaker than usual after a downturn. The economy expanded by 2.4% in % in 2011 and 2.2% in 2012.Analysts had hoped that this year would see a return to more robust growth of 3% or 4%.But in comparison with other developed countries, the US is still performing relatively well.In Europe in 2012, Germany's economy grew by 0.7%, the French economy was flat, while Italy's shrank by 2.4%.In the UK, the economy grew 0.3% in the first quarter of 2013 from the final quarter of 2012. In the US the non-annualised quarter-on-quarter growth figure was 0.6%.BBC © 2013
Warning over bug in Viber chat app日 19:04The flaw revolves around the way that Viber handles repeated pop-up messagesSecurity firms are warning about a security bug in the popular Viber app for Android phones. The flaw in the net phone application lets attackers bypass screen locks and take control of a smartphone. The app has been downloaded more than 50 million times from Google's Play store according to statistics from the search giant.Viber said it was aware of the flaw and was preparing to release a fix that would close the loophole. The flaw was discovered by Vietnamese security firm Bkav and works in different ways depending on which Android phone a victim is using. In a blog post, Bkav said the attack revolved around sending several messages to a victim via Viber. The free Viber app works like Skype and lets Android phone users send messages and talk for free. Bkav discovered that sending pop-up messages and using some other parts of the Viber app let them circumvent the lock screens that many people use to secure their phones.&The way Viber handles to pop-up its messages on smartphones' lock screen is unusual, resulting in its failure to control programming logic, causing the flaw to appear,& said Nguyen Minh Duc, head of Bkav's security division. He advised people not to let anyone else use their phone until the bug was fixed.Viber said it was aware of the flaw and, via its support forum, gave people advice about how to avoid falling victim. It said it was working on a fix and hoped to resolve the issue soon. The discovery of the bug is the latest in a series of security flaws that have struck apps in Google's Android store. Many cyber thieves are aiming their efforts at the phones in a bid to steal saleable information or generate revenue by getting handsets to call or send messages to premium rate numbers.Despite this, Martin Borrett, director of IBM's European Institute for Advanced Security, said phone apps were getting more secure faster than other sectors at the same point in their development.IBM was &optimistic& about the improving security of mobile apps because tools were emerging that made it straightforward to scan code for the bugs and loopholes that cyber thieves seek, he said.&You cannot expect all developers to be experts in security,& he said. &We have to make tools that make it easier for them.&I think people are more switched on to the issues and are better placed to address them and have the knowledge and tools to counter these threats,& he told the BBC.BBC © 2013

Thirteen die in Mexico prison battle日 10:24Worried relatives have gathered at the jail to wait for news of their loved onesAt least 13 people are dead after a battle broke out between prisoners at a jail in the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosi.A group of inmates used homemade knives and picks to attack rivals at the La Pila prison, the state attorney general's office was quoted as saying.Authorities took several hours to bring the fighting under control.Deadly outbreaks of violence are common in Mexico's overcrowded jails, which house inmates from rival drug gangs.Dozens of people were injured - some seriously - in the fighting that broke out at La Pila, situated in the state capital, early on Saturday morning, officials said. The authorities in the northern state of San Luis Potosi have begun to name the dead and warned concerned families waiting for news that the number of fatalities may rise.Violence began when a group of prisoners took action after being harassed by other inmates, news agency AP quoted the state attorney general's office as saying.Rivalries between criminal gangs frequently spills over into Mexico's antiquated and dangerous prisons, correspondents say. Studies say some prisons are effectively run by gangs.Human rights groups say the penal system suffers from chronic overcrowding and is in urgent need of an overhaul.Despite assertions that the prison system would be reformed after the last major incident, in which 44 inmates were killed, there have been no tangible improvements, neither during the final year of the previous administration nor in the first six months of President Enrique Pena Nieto's government, says the BBC's Will Grant in Mexico City.BBC © 2013
Google acquires news stream Wavii日 15:27Wavii allows users to choose up to 12 topics when customising their news feedGoogle has acquired news stream service Wavii for an estimated $30m (£18m).Wavii, which was launched last year, offers customised news feed to users, summarising news stories, tweets and blogs related to their interests.Apple had also been keen to buy the start-up. According to reports, it wanted to incorporate the technology in the Siri function of its devices.Last month, Yahoo acquired a news summarisation app, Summly, for &dozens of millions& of pounds.Yahoo subsequently added the facility to its iPhone app earlier this week.Neither Google or Wavii have revealed the price of the deal, but most reports say it was about $30m.Wavii was created by engineers who previously worked for Amazon and Microsoft and offers services via the web or as a smartphone app.It is closely integrated with Facebook. That may change since the social network competes against Google+.'Structured feed'According to its website, Wavii claims that the basic idea behind its service is to summarise everything that users care about into a customised news feed on the lines of a Facebook wall.&We knew that we really liked what Facebook did… clearly summarizing everything our friends are doing into a simple, structured feed, and adding in related events and photos,& it explains.&Why can't we get all of our news that way?&Wavii set out to solve this by making a similar feed that covers every topic in the news you might want to follow… or as we sometimes describe it, to make Facebook out of Google,& it adds. Its connection with Facebook does not stop there. Along with allowing users to select at least 12 topics of interest it also detects their likes based on their previous Facebook activity. It can process up to 1,000 articles per minute and then summarize the most important bits to the user via a personalized news feed.&We do it by teaching computers to read everything that is reported or shared on the internet, and automatically produce interesting social content about it,& it says on its site.According to some analysts, the technology could be used by Google to improve search results for news stories.BBC © 2013

China 'becomes biggest PC market'日 13:38In China the sale of desktops and laptops is evenly splitChina has overtaken the US as the world's biggest market for personal computers, according to a market data report.Research by the consultants IHS said PC shipments to the country rose to 69 million units in 2012.The US was the largest market up until 2011. Last year, it had orders for 66 million units.China is also the world's biggest internet market, with more than 500 million users.Laptops are the fastest rising sector in developed markets and have overtaken PCs, but in China the sale of desktops and laptops is evenly split.ExpansionPeter Lin, senior analyst for computer platforms at IHS, said: &The equal share of shipments for desktop [PCs] and notebooks [lightweight laptops] in China is unusual, since consumers in most regions today tend to prefer more agile mobile PCs, rather than the bulky, stationary desktops.&The relatively large percentage of desktop PC shipments in China is due to huge demand in the country's rural areas, which account for a major segment of the country's 1.34 billion citizens.&These consumers tend to prefer the desktop.&IHS expects Chinese demand to mirror that in developed markets by 2014, when it predicts a desktop-to-laptop PC ratio of 36-64%.Demand for PCs in China is projected to grow by just 3-4% this year as China comes into line with others in preferring smaller devices. The Chinese government is investing heavily in computer infrastructure, and plans to spend around 40 trillion yuan ($6.4 £4.2tn) building rural infrastructure in the next 10 years.BBC © 2013

New adverts 'could track your eyes'日 23:13By Dave LeeTechnology reporter, BBC NewsSideways can track up to 14 people at onceAn advertising system which is able to track your eye movements while you shop has been created by researchers based at Lancaster University. The Sideways project uses software to locate faces and eye movements of shoppers captured on camera. It could allow for video screens which change adverts depending on what you look at in a shop. The team told the BBC they hoped the technology would be in use in shops within five years. The technology can also be used to allow people to use their eyes to control content on screens, such as scrolling through items on a list.&The system uses a single ordinary camera that is placed close to the screen,& explained senior researcher Andreas Bulling. &So we don't need any additional equipment.&The system detects the faces of people walking by and calculates where the eyes are relative to the eye corners.&Stumbling blockMr Bulling has worked on the project with fellow researchers Hans Gellersen and Yanxia Zhang from Lancaster's School of Computing and Communications.Existing eye-tracking technologies tend to require a lengthy set-up process, and can only be used by one person at a time. The Sideways system, Mr Bulling says, can track up to 14 people simultaneously.&With normal systems you always have to calibrate the tracker to the specific user,& he explained to the BBC.&Calibration is a major stumbling block for interactive gaze-based applications at the moment because people always have to go through this calibration procedure - it's time-consuming and annoying.&In a video demonstrating the system, one example for potential use is a shopper scrolling through album covers in a music shop.Hot topicEye-tracking is starting to become more commonplace within popular technology products. One company, Tobii, has been backed by the likes of IBM and has shown off prototypes of a gaze-controlled television.Last month, Samsung launched its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4. It monitors whether the user is looking at the device by tracking eye movement.&Eye-tracking is definitely something that is currently a hot topic,& said Mr Bulling.&It is really gaining momentum. I fully expect this technology to become available widely in the near future.&However, as with many new technologies designed to learn more about how we act, concerns over privacy are likely to arise as the systems are rolled out.&I guess it always depends how this information is used,& Mr Bulling said.&If the system is only there to improve the shopping experience, customers will probably be fine with such a system.&If it's a more passive monitoring system of gaze-information, so the user is not aware of it, this could really have considerable privacy challenges.&Follow Dave Lee on Twitter @DaveLeeBBCBBC © 2013

Mexico Congress passes telecoms bill日 6:41The reform is seen as a consequence of President Enrique Pena Nieto's Pact for Mexico allianceMexico's Congress has passed a major reform, in an attempt to make the country's telecommunications industry more open and competitive. The final approval of the Senate was given after more than a month of discussion in both houses. The bill now needs to be approved by a majority of the state congresses. The reform may challenge the empire of the world's richest man, Carlos Slim, whose America Movil company controls two-thirds of the phone market. It is also likely to affect the interests of Latin America's biggest television network, Televisa, which has a 70% share of the audience. The constitutional change is expected to encourage more foreign investment, allowing non-Mexican companies to become majority shareholders for the first time.'Untouchable monopolies'It also creates mechanisms that aim to prevent one company from becoming too dominant. These include the creation of a new powerful regulatory agency, and a specialised court system to deal with specific cases.&We are touching on something which for a long time was thought to be untouchable - the monopolies,& left-wing senator Alejandra Barrales told Reuters news agency.Correspondents say that so far the mighty Mexican telecom companies have eluded efforts to tighten regulations. If enacted, the new bill will also make it possible for the government to force companies to sell assets , so that they cannot control more than 50% of the market. The motion was approved by 108 votes, with three against and two abstentions. It was passed by the Lower House last Thursday with a few changes. Now the reform must to be approved by a majority of the 31 Mexican states and the Federal District (Mexico City). But before it comes into force, lawmakers say a secondary bill to implement the changes will have to be drawn up.The telecommunications reform is seen as a consequence of President Enrique Pena Nieto's Pact for Mexico, a broad alliance designed to bring about structural changes.BBC © 2013
Scientists make 'bug-eye' camera日 15:45A digital camera that functions like an insect's compound eye is reported in the journal Nature this week.It comprises an array of 180 small lenses, which, along with their associated electronics, are stretched across a curved mounting. The prototype currently has few pixels, so its images are low-resolution.But the device displays an immense depth of field, and a very wide-angle view that avoids the distortion seen in standard camera lenses. The development team, led from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US, believes its new imaging system could eventually find uses in surveillance and for endoscopic investigations of the human body.In their report, the researchers also suggest such cameras could be fitted to tiny aerial vehicles one day that behaved like robotic insects. At the moment, the &bug-eye& system's vision is comparable to that enjoyed by some ants and beetles. The expectation, however, is that the array can be greatly enlarged.Imaging should improve as the number of microlenses is increased&The compound design of the fly's eye incorporates perhaps 28,000 small eyes, or ommatidia,& explained team-member Dr Jianliang Xiao from the University of Colorado at Boulder, US. &That's the direction we want to move in,& he told BBC News.In an insect, each ommatidium in the compound eye has a corneal lens, a crystalline cone and a light-sensitive organ at its base. The ommatidia work in unison to build a picture of the world. In the artificial version, microlenses sit above photodetectors and other electronics, and software stitches together the individual signals. This whole arrangement is fabricated flat and then moulded to a hemispherical shape to give a 160-degree view. The latest generation of stretchable electronics was key to achieving the desired geometry.Scientists are keen to exploit the advantages of compound eyes. For one, they show remarkable depth of field - they can focus on objects at different distances at the same time. They also do not suffer from the aberrations seen in single lens systems when viewing off-axis objects. A good example is the huge distortion observed in wide-angle camera lenses such as the fish-eye.For an insect, their compound system capabilities make them very sensitive to movement.&Our system could eventually be used in surveillance cameras. One device of this kind could see 180 degrees. If you had two, you could then conceivably see the whole field of view,& said Dr Xiao.Alexander Borst and Johannes Plett are from the Max-Planck-Institute of Neurobiology in Martinsried, Germany. They are not connected with the research but speculated for Nature on other possible future applications.&Picture the following: a palm-sized micro aerial vehicle uses an artificial faceted eye to navigate autonomously through a collapsed building while other sensors onboard scan the environment for smoke, radioactivity or even people trapped beneath rubble and debris,& they wrote in the journal.BBC © 2013
ECB expected to cut rates to new low日 15:42The ECB's key interest rate is already at the historic low of 0.75%The European Central Bank (ECB) is widely expected to cut interest rates later, as it seeks to boost growth amid ongoing fears for the eurozone economy.A cut would be the first in 10 months, and reduce its key interest rate to a new record low from the current 0.75%.Concerns are growing about the health of eurozone economies, reflected on Thursday in data showing that German manufacturing shrank in April. The ECB is due to announce its decision at 13:45 local time (12:45 BST).The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for Germany's manufacturing sector, which accounts for around a fifth of the economy, fell to 48.1 in April from 49 in March. A reading below 50 indicates contraction. It was Germany's second straight month below the 50 line, and its lowest reading since December. And in France, Italy and Spain, the eurozone's next three biggest economies, the PMI data also revealed contractions in manufacturing activity. For the 17-nation eurozone bloc as a whole, the PMI index fell to 46.7 last month, from March's 46.8.&There is nothing here to suggest that manufacturing will turn the corner and stabilise any time soon, putting greater onus on policymakers to act quickly to reinvigorate growth,& said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit, which collates the PMI figures.Official data released on Tuesday showed record high unemployment in the eurozone, and inflation at a three-year low.Austerity fearsMany economists had already speculated that lower interest rates from the ECB were likely, but said the fresh data released this week made the case for a cut even stronger. The majority of economists polled by the Reuters news agency are forecasting that rates will be reduced to 0.5%.Markets are likely to react positively to a cut, but it is not clear what impact, if any, the move will have on the real economy. In recent months there have been growing calls for European countries to move away from austerity measures, which critics say are stifling growth.Instead there are calls for a greater focus on stimulus measures. Both French President Francois Hollande and newly-elected Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta have urged a reconsideration of austerity policies. But there are concerns that changes to the ECB's interest rates are not feeding through to those economies most in need of a boost, with potential lenders still worried about the economic health of countries such as Greece and Spain.BBC © 2013
Google edition adopts 'Palestine'日 20:11Previous tagline (left) and current tagline on google.psInternet giant Google has changed the tagline on the homepage of its Palestinian edition from &Palestinian Territories& to &Palestine&.The change, introduced on 1 May, means google.ps now displays &Palestine& in Arabic and English under Google's logo.Using the word Palestine is controversial for some. Israeli policy is that the borders of a Palestinian state are yet to be agreed. In November, the UN gave Palestine the status of &non-member observer state&.The decision by the General Assembly was strongly opposed by Israel and the United States. Previously, Palestine only had &observer entity& status. It followed an unsuccessful Palestinian bid to join the international body as a full member state in 2011 because of a lack of support in the UN Security Council.Palestinians in general seek recognition for the state they are trying to establish and the adoption of the name Palestine.Israel considers any formal use of the word Palestine as pre-judging the outcome of currently stalled peace talks. In much of Israel's official terminology the West Bank is referred to as Judea and Samaria.'Right direction'In a statement given to the BBC on Friday, Google spokesman Nathan Tyler said: &We're changing the name 'Palestinian Territories' to 'Palestine' across our products. We consult a number of sources and authorities when naming countries.&In this case, we are following the lead of the UN, Icann [the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers], ISO [International Organisation for Standardisation] and other international organisations.&The Palestinian Authority (PA) welcomed Google's decision.&This is a step in the right direction, a timely step and one that encourages others to join in and give the right definition and name for Palestine instead of Palestinian territories,& Dr Sabri Saidam, advisor to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, told the BBC.&Most of the traffic that happens now happens in the virtual world and this means putting Palestine on the virtual map as well as on the geographic maps,& he added.Dr Saidam said that since the UN vote on 29 November, the PA had written to international companies, including Google, asking them to replace their usage of &Palestinian Territories& with &Palestine&.BBC © 2013
US job creation strong in April日 21:05US employment rose more than expected in April. The latest US non-farm payrolls show that 165,000 jobs were created last month. Economists had been predicting a figure closer to 145,000.The US Labour Department also revised its figures for March and February upwards. The February number was revised up to 332,000, the best monthly gain since May 2010.The unemployment rate is now at a four-year low of 7.5%.New jobs are being created in the USThe drop in the unemployment rate reflected an increase in employment, rather than people leaving the workforce.March non-farm payrolls were revised upwards by 50,000 to 138,000.Giving the Obama administration's view of the figures, Alan Krueger, the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said: &It is critical that we remain focused on pursuing policies to speed job creation and expand the middle class, as we continue to dig our way out of the deep hole that was caused by the severe recession that began in December 2007.&Joe Manimbo, market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions, said the numbers were &surprisingly positive&.&This shows the job market and the economy in general appear to be more resilient than investors had feared,& he added.'Uneven' labour marketBut some analysts felt the details behind the headline numbers still pointed to a economy that continues to struggle. Construction employment fell and the payrolls in the manufacturing sector remained flat.Tom Porcelli, US economist at RBC Capital Markets, saw a more mixed picture in the figures.&A couple of things drive this home, namely average weekly earnings are down and aggregate hours. Those are more forward looking metrics and how it will unfold in the fourth quarter that is not encouraging,& he said.&This report confirms that the labour market backdrop remains very much uneven.&The US dollar gained more than 1% against the Japanese yen, hitting 99.18 yen. The euro lost 0.1% against the greenback, falling to $1.3059. Before the payroll numbers were released, it had been trading higher against the dollar.Spot gold fell 0.4% immediately after the release of the figures, to $1,460.11 an ounce.BBC © 2013
Obama foresees no US troops in Syria日 7:46President Barack Obama made the comments during a visit to Costa RicaUS President Barack Obama says he does not foresee a scenario that would require sending US troops to Syria. He reaffirmed that clear evidence that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons would be a &game changer&, but that any response would not be rushed.Earlier Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said the US was no longer ruling out arming the rebels. This comes as dozens of people were reportedly killed by government troops in north-western Syria on Thursday.Mr Obama told reporters in Costa Rica on Friday that as a commander-in-chief he could rule nothing out &because circumstances change&.But he added he did not foresee a scenario in which &American boots on the ground in Syria& would be good for either America or Syria.' Pools of blood 'Details of Thursday's incident in al-Bayda, near the port of Baniyas, were given by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Violations Documentation Centre in Syria. They said more than 40 people had been killed. An online video appears to show seven bodies in pools of blood.Syrian state media reported that &a number of terrorists& had been killed when government forces captured a cache of arms and ammunition in the area.Al-Bayda is reportedly a predominantly Sunni Muslim village located in an area inhabited largely by members of President Bashar al-Assad's Alawite sect, a heterodox offshoot of Shia Islam.More than 70,000 people have been killed since fighting between Syrian forces and rebels erupted in March 2011.BBC © 2013
Six childcare gurus that have changed parenting日 6:28By Alex CampbellBBC NewsIt's been 70 years since the idea of the &good enough mother& was popularised by psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott. Since then, there's been a plethora of parenting advice, with everything from the naughty step to a time limit on cuddling catching on.History has provided no shortage of &supernanny& figures with big ideas about how best to raise children.Childcare advice is a multi-billion pound industry with an avalanche of books, magazines, and television shows competing for credibility. Here are six of the people who have had the biggest impact on parenting over the past 100 years.Sir Frederick Truby KingChild welfare reformer Sir Frederick Truby King is credited with drastically reducing infant mortality in his native New Zealand. His research also led to a radical improvement in childhood nutrition and he was knighted in 1925 for his contribution to society. But for all of his laudable achievements, Truby King is undoubtedly best known as an early champion of enforcement parenting - with its emphasis on discipline and detachment. The key to the Truby King method was to feed babies by the clock every four hours and preferably never at night - stoically ignoring demands for sustenance in between. He recommended placing babies in their own rooms immediately and leaving them in the garden for long periods to toughen them up. He also imposed a 10-minute daily cap on cuddles.Parenting was about routine and discipline. The formative months were for eating, sleeping and growing - not bonding. The philosophy might seem brutal to modern day doters, but childcare historian and author Hugh Cunningham says mothers were inclined to trust the experts of the era.&Not every parent at the time did it this way but they will have been aware of it.&A significant number of people simply thought science was telling them and therefore it was the right thing to do,& he says.Dr Benjamin SpockDr Benjamin Spock's Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care is one of the best-selling books of all time, having sold some 50 million since it was first published in 1946.Challenging the child-rearing orthodoxy of the early 20th Century, Dr Spock encouraged a more gentle approach to bringing up children, and told parents to trust their own instincts and common sense. The Spock guide to parenting - which encouraged affection and recognised that every baby is different - went mainstream in the 1960s.It was probably a convenient time for a new style of parenting, according to psychologist Dr Aric Sigman. Mothers were increasingly getting used to household appliances and disposable nappies, which left far more time for cuddling, doting and pampering than most Trudy King parents were likely to have enjoyed.&Changes in parenting trends reflect changes in politics, the economy and the parents' needs, even though children's needs really haven't changed,& says Sigman.Donald WinnicottAbout the same time as Spock's parenting guide began shifting millions, Winnicott was beginning a stint of almost 20 years of influential broadcasts for the BBC, the first of which was in 1943.His broadcasts were aimed directly at mothers, with his &good enough mother& philosophy promoting the idea that they weren't perfect. Occasional failure was not just inevitable in parenting - it was part of the child's learning curve.Like Spock, Winnicott believed in parents' intuition. &It is when a mother trusts her judgement that she is at her best,& he said. The paediatrician and psychoanalyst didn't believe in setting regimes or even giving instructions. He believed in understanding, not admonishing.Mumsnet founder Justine Roberts says some parents adopt a similar style today.&I like the principle of trusting your instincts - don't sweat the small stuff too much,& she says.Penelope LeachContinuing a growing trend for a liberal antidote to the routines and rituals of the previous generation, psychologist Penelope Leach rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s.Leach's book, Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five, has sold more than two million copies since its original publication in 1977, and her work remains popular with some parents. Her style is &child-centred& parenting. You had the baby, now come the sacrifices.&Whatever you are doing, however you are coping, if you listen to your child and to your own feelings, there will be something you can actually do to put things right or make the best of those that are wrong,& she notes in the book's introduction. An expert in child development, Leach has more recently spoken out against &crying-it-out& techniques - advocated by some as a method of helping to establish routine. Some have described her as &legendary for making parents feel guilty&.Gina FordThe so-called Queen of Routine's parenting plans are loved and loathed but never ignored.Gina Ford's methods have been branded &
Gina Ford's methods have been branded &absolute nonsense& by Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg and led to a legal settlement with Mumsnet after some of its members posted explicitly hostile reviewsGina Ford recommends leaving a child to cry in some circumstancesBut at one point three of her books accounted for 25% of the sprawling childcare books market, and she boasts celebrities supporters such as Kate Winslet. The former maternity nurse has sold more than half a million copies of her original 1999 publication The Contented Little Baby Book. Her bestselling guide advocates a strict regime for both parent and child, broken into five-minute slots, which is built around set feeding times to establish a routine as early as possible. It recommends ignoring a crying child to help restore sleeping patterns in certain circumstances, as well as not making eye contact before bedtime to avoid excitement.Jo FrostReality TV show Supernanny has reached tens of millions of viewers across 47 countries and spawned its own US spin-off - billing star professional nanny Jo Frost as a modern day Mary Poppins.Jo Frost (centre) has spawned a global TV franchise: here she poses with the French and German 'Supernannies'For many parents, Frost is the inspiration for the widely used &naughty step& technique.Children who are misbehaving get a warning, but if they carry on they have to sit on a step - waiting one minute for every year of age. Afterwards, they have to apologise.Other staples, which include a regular dose of finger-wagging and face-to-face ultimatums, have also infiltrated homes across the world. But while Jo Frost's no-nonsense approach appeals to many parents, it's also been criticised for being part of a culture which invades children's privacy.Tracey Jensen, lecturer in media and cultural studies at Newcastle University, told the Guardian newspaper Supernanny offers up the spectacle of the &bad enough mother&, usually working-class, who is shamed before she is transformed. You can follow the Magazine on Twitter and on Facebook
好吧,今天这篇有点长
1. Travelling more多旅行I regret not travelling more, and so does nearly everyone that I have asked. Before kids, and mortgages and marriages, when our commitments and expenses were lower, the opportunities for travel were much greater, but for some reason many of us thought we’d always have time for travel later. We dreamed of visiting the pyramids of Egypt, surfing off the Hawaiian coast, dining at a Parisian café, drinking espresso in Rome, trekking through the rainforest, and so much more. Sadly, many of us never made these journeys and the opportunity passed us by.
2. Investing early早投资How many times have we kicked ourselves for not starting our 401Ks,in our twenties, for not putting our excess cash in long term investments, for not investing in our future early. No matter how much we try, we can never get back the head start that we missed. Playing catch up in our 40’s and 50’s is very difficult.
3. Being more responsible with spending更合理的安排支出In order to invest in our retirement or save for that down payment, we would have needed to make wiser financial spending choices. Things like buying or holding on to that perfectly reliable used car, instead of splurging on the new model…because we could, eating out less and saving for a house instead, buying fewer shoes and purses and clothes and paying off student loans sooner. So many saving opportunities lost, money spent on tangible things, instead of on the future.
I regret not focusing more on where I wanted to go in life, what I wanted to do, who I wanted to be and what it would take to get there. With some more planning in our twenties, we’d be further ahead in our 40s and perhaps a bit happier as well.
