B.O.A. closed my credit card account

Contact information:Bank of AmericaP.O. Box 15019Wilmington, Phone: 1-800-732-9194
I have had a credit card with Bank of America/MBNA since 1997. And, I have used my credit card account for balance transfers since 1997. Just recently, I was told about a companion card to go along with my current B.O.A. card. I was told by a representative that I could transfer some of my credit available on my current B.O.A. to this new account once I received the new card in the mail in order to take advantage of a 0% balance transfer for 15 months.
I called a few days ago on Monday to see if I was going to get that companion card in the mail and I was told that I had been rejected for the new card. I asked why, and I was told that upon closer review of my currently revolving credit lines and balances with other cards that I was rejected for the new card and that my existing credit available($10, 177.00) would be taken away from my current account and it would be closed even though I currently have a balance of $5, 822.00 at a 1.99% rate until March 2009. And, also, I have never been late or missed a payment the whole time I have had this card since 1997. So, my credit card account has never been a delinquent account. I have very good history with them and they acknowledged that, but they said that was the right decision.
I have made balance transfers with them about every year since 1997 and they have never had a problem with this before. They just processed my most recent balance transfer in July 0.00) at the 1.99% rate until March 2009, and the balance is now down to $5, 822.00 like I said earlier. So, I have shown that I can make my payments every month and I have not missed any payments on my other credit cards and they admitted that I do have a good credit score. So, I asked them why do they have to close my account even though I have a balance, have not missed any payments etc., and they told me that all it takes is for me to miss one payment on one of my credit cards and then all of my credit card interest rates and payments will go up and that means that I will probably eventually not be able to pay them. Well, I have never demonstrated that I would or could miss or make a payment late! I have been with them since 1997! I don't understand this! I have excellent credit and they acknowledged that! This is not fair! They even closed my husband's Bank of America card account too, all in one phone call!
Now, because they have closed mine and my husband's credit card accounts, our credit will be ruined because credit reports will show that they closed our 2 credit card accounts and I still have a balance on one of them! The fact that they(Bank of America) closed our credit card accounts is going to now lower our credit score and cause our other credit card companies to possibly raise our interest rates and our payments and will also, most definitely cause them(other credit card companies) to stop offering us any low rate balance transfer offers! So, in effect, Bank of America is going to cause the very scenario that they were trying to avoid in the first place! By closing my accounts and ruining my credit in the process, they may cause my other credit card interest rates to go up, therefore increasing my minimum payments, and also causing them(other credit card companies) not to offer any low interest balance transfers which will in turn, cause me not to be able to pay off my current balance with them(Bank of America)! I have tried to get them to reverse their decision about closing my credit card account, but they said that they can't and I have spoke with supervisor after supervisor to no avail. They are ruining my credit by closing my accounts!
What can I do? Do they have the right to do this? Do I have any recourse? What can I do about this? Can someone help me?
Thank You So Much,

It just happened to me today. B of A continued to raise my credit line and provide me great rates. But without noticed just raised my interest rate last month. I was a member form the MBNA days since 199) and did not miss any payments. My monthly payment was going to double because of the new interest rate. So I called voicing my concern, I was sent to a debt analysis. She asked a couple of question, so I answered them, and she seemed nice, like she was trying to help me, then she said she was going to put my cards on hold for me. I didn&t know what she was talking about, and then she said I could just cut up my cards because they are no longer any good. I told her I use one for work, having three cards just canceled will kill my credit score and not being about to use my card for work will affect my job. She did not care about my situation, and said it was too late, she put the information in the system, and that is it. In twenty minutes she made a decision that will affect me for my life. I will do whatever I can to never use B of A ever again. I have my IRA with them, my mortgage, my savings and my checking, I am done with them as of today.
Hi, I always hated the BofA, and I cancelled my checking and also savings account, and credit cards with BofA several years ago, but when I had (I think) MBNA card the BofA took it over and I ended up again with BofA. BAD LUCK! Recently BofA reduced my credit from $10, 000 to $9, 600, so I called them up for an explanation, and asked them to increase my limit back to $10, 000. Bad move. They were not cooperative at all, although I was with them since 2002 (new credit card). I tried to use my credit card a few days ago, and I couldn't. So I called BofA to ask what's going on, and I was told that my account was closed! I complained about lowering my limit, and not willing to increase my limit back to $10, 000, so the BofA wanted to show me "who is the boss", and closed my account. I told them that their customer service sucks. I will never use BofA in my life, and I hope that this bank will file bankuptcy one day, and be gone! Please if you still using BofA, take you money and go somewhere else. Let them die!
I have worked with Bank of America several years and must admit this bank is a definite rip off! Bank of America makes so much money daily not only by the earning in which clients are depositing into there accounts, but the non sufficient fund charges that the bank makes off every client. If a client does not have enough money in there checking account to purchase a product using there debit card, why does the transaction still process? For those who wonder why, it's so the make can make more money. In the system at any Bank of America branch any associate can assist each client in regards to reversing a service fee. The actual limit for each client is 3 reversals annually. Many client always cask, "why doesn't the card just not work if, although I just deposited, the money is not available in my account?" You want to know why, its because the bank wants to make more money in order to service. Plain and simple. That is the bottom line. It's sad to say so, but that is just how it is. For those who think Bank of America is the strongest or highest qualified bank in the united states, even as an employee, I beg to differ!
I just got a letter from BOA closing my credit card. My card started out as a secured card and BOA made it a regular credit card in August 2008. I am trying to rebuild my credit. I have never been late or over the limit. I paid my payments early. This really upsets me because I am trying to do everything to rebuild my credit and now this is going to hurt me. Is there anything I can do?
Please. For those who have been wronged. File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. This worked for me.
Bank of America SUCKS! How dare they use the Word "AMERICA" in their Name!!! I Had perfect Credit all my Life, most recent credit Score of 740, NEVER late for anything EVER!! BOA decided to Close All FOUR of my Credit Cards at Once, some for not using them, others Just because they wanted too!! Now My Credit is Ruined and I Can't even Get another credit card because of Their Actions! They should be Hung from the Nearest Tree, but NOOOOOO, Instead Our Good Ole Uncle Sam Gives Them MORE MONEY to Piss away and NOT be accountable for while they SCREW the AMERICAN PEOPLE as much as they Can!!! Talk about CROOKS!!! Well i finally decided I Don't WANT no more credit Cards EVER!! If i pay off what I Have now, ok, If NOT that's ok Too. I can play their game too...What's to STOP US from ALL WALKING AWAY from the Credit Card Debt? Are they gonna arrest All of The People in our Country?? It might not be soo bad, Then at least they'd have to Feed us, House us, Medical Care, Recreation, etc...Sounds pretty good to me compared to What BOA and the other crooks are doing to us And NOBODY does NOTHING about it!! Better Business Bureau won't do NOTHING, neither will anyone else! Screw The People seems to be the American Way nowadays. I Gave the best 4 years of My Life to This Country During the Viet Nam War and this is the Thank you Myself and other Vets (along with the rest of the USA) Gets! Thank you soo Much "AMERICA"... I Hope BOA goes totally out of business forever!!!
I had 2 boa cc accounts closed for the past 2 months one has $1700 and the other around $8000, I went back to college and had to work less, when my minimum monthly payment went up about 50% for both accounts I called and they sent me to dept specialist and didn't do any thing but cause boa to close my accounts, I called back and been told that there is nothing I can do, so just like they wanted cut my throat and ruin my credit, I'm gonna stop dealing with them, I just paid off in full $1700 and plan to tear that bank of America piece of sh*t in pieces, now regarding the $8 grand account I plan to pay it in full as soon as I can, I will close all of my boa accounts forever, on a positive note Discover is the only card that I have now, they been loyal and they were always willing to help, in any case I am about to check my credit score I had 730 last time I checked, my advice never rely on credit always have your own money to back you up and defiantly not BOA's
I agree. The scanners are unreliable and even slower than a human teller. These ATMs are purely to reduce the work of the bank, thrusting it to the customer.
The just did this crap to my sister, who has excellent credit scores, then told her she had a companion account and offered to open a new card with the companion account?? What the hell is that?? Said it would be the same % rate, but a little less in credit limit. We are stil trying to figure out what the hell this companion account was, because my sister didn't even know she had one?? Anyone know what type of scam this is now that they are using on my sister??
Luckly for me I cancelled my BOA account about 1 year ago, just because I didn't need it.
VISA SHOULD REMOVE THEIR LOGO FROM THIS INSTITUTION, THEY ARE FRAUDS, FRAUDS AND MORE FRAUDS... TOO BAD THIS IS WHERE OUR TAXES ARE GOING?? PLEASE STOP THIS! WE ALL NEED TO DO SOMETHING!!
This must stop. As legal as it may seem, there is a loop hole in how BOA is going about closing our cards and that loop hole is what will allow us to fight back. I have been a BOA customer since 2000 and received a credit card with a 6% rate in 2003. I have never been late with this account, I have paid off a $20K limit several times throughout having this card, and always pay more than the minimum. Well in March 2009, I called to transfer $400 to my checking account. They put me on hold and came back and stated after careful review of my credit they will have to close my account. Ofcourse I hit the roof, and asked what caused this decision and they stated that I had a late mortgage payment in February 2009, which by the way Countrywide reported in error and has since corrected this. I called BOA back to let them know that Countrywide has corrected this. Unfortunately, BOA stated they cannot reopen my credit card at this time because after looking at my credit report again, I had a late car payment in 2008 (which by the way I am a c0-signer on!!). I called back to speak with another representative, but obviously they tainted my notes because the rep basically repeated what the previous representatives stated without knowing my full situation. I requested to speak with a supervisor whom they claim was not available at that time and promised I would recieve a phone call within 48 hours. Well, the supervisor never called and I am going the extra mile to make sure my story is heard and told. It is obvious that BOA is in a financial rut (double-standard huh?) and they need to collect as much debit as possible in a short period of time to recover. Therefore they are proactively closing credit cards, raising apr, and lowering limits so they can sell this debt to a debt collector agency which will be responsible for collecting it. By this time, BOA has already been paid off for the debt. By the way, it would be very attractive for the debt collectors to buy this debt from BOA since we were good paying customers.
I agree with the post that stated we should report this to the better business bureau (BBB) so we can begin a documentation trail. Please, I am encouraging everyone to do this and I will be writing a letter to BOA regarding what has happened to include the pleather of people that has been mistreated and scammed, such as yourself. This can become a class action suit and we must continue to work hard at making this a case. I will be in touch and plan on starting a ning site to follow this up. Thanks!
Iam so upset with B OF A I to applied for a balance transfer and instead of helping me do so they closed my acct.I have been a customer for 20+ years.I have spoke on the phone with them three times they will do nothing.I don't want to continue doing bussiness with them I just wanted them to do something so this won't effect my credit score. I have never been late on a payment with them or any other creditors.Well needless to say I will let everyone I know beware of Bank of America. Also I will be closing my checking acct. with them and never have any dealings with them again.
My account at Bank of America was also closed for no reason! Letters received contradict one another. All representatives I have spoken to give me a different answer. Risk Department who closed my account (still no real reason why). I made a deposit which they cash and then reversed due to 1st letter signature missing= no signature missing. I called then they said that the issuers bank reversed the deposit which I went to and they said they did not that signature is the same that was on file. 2nd letter from BOA states that check had insufficient funds which it did not (proven by issuers bank) 3rd letter received by BOA states they closed my accounts and no activity will be processed that was on 3/26. 4/1 they took an automated transfer that I did on thier (BOA) website from another bank. They also charged me a fee of $25.00 for paying a bill but the fee was due to insufficient funds even though I had way more money in the account (782.89) than the bill (85.75). 4/2 BOA Risk Dept wanted me to get notarized all the paper work from issuers bank and letter from issuer and take to a BOA branch to have them fax it to them. Same day after the fax was confirmed I called Risk Dept and they already sent out a check for the funds owed to me $782.89. 4/6 recieved check $682.89. Called 4/7 saying they owe me $100.00 and they transferred me to thier recovery department who says they have nothing to do with this and that I need to speak to the Risk Department. I have been going in circles for thier ERROR and paying fees which they caused and no one is responsible!!! Who and where can I go to complain.!!! Will never use Bank of America for nothing!!! Awful customer service and awful practices/
LEGAL ACTION TIME!!! PLEASE contact me at
This week I found out that my line of credit in excess of $85, 000 was closed as it was not used ( I tried to buy a coke on my credit card recently and it was declined). Imagine if I had a dinner with 10 of my best friends and rang up a $5, 000 dinner bill and the card was declined. I WOULD HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR "FAILURE TO PAY AN INKEEPER" No letter has been sent nor any advance notice from BOA.
I only found out due to the fact that BOA had given me a free 2 year security contract due to the fact that they breached their own security controls by giving my personal information to a 3rd party over the telephone when they offered me a low interest rate on my credit card. Real brilliant of them.
Did I say I was a card holder of good standing since 1986.
When I pressed to reopen my account or transfer the funds from a 2nd account I had with them that they improperly transferred 8 months ago they told me I needed to provide them with 2 years tax returns showing $600, 000 income and bank statements showing $600, 000 in liquid cash assets.
After several phone calls my only recourse is to consider LEGAL ACTION against BOA
If anyone has interest or knows of any others taking action please contact me at
Please include a phone number and I will be happy to call you back.
dumb dumb dumb
BOA is ruining my credit. I had three credit cards with them. Two had no balances. One had a balance of $11, 400. The limit was several thousand higher. They sent me a notice saying that they were going to change my agreed upon fixed interest rate of 7.90% to a variable rate that looked as if it would be 25%, something akin to a default rate. I called them immediately and they said I was going to be changing to a 12.99%. This stuck me as very odd that the written information did not say this. They said I would have the right to decline and retain the 7.90% so I did. They said if I ever used the card it would automatically go up to the 12.99% rate. Well, they took away all of the remaining credit on that account making it look as though I have a maxed out card. Then I was at the Mondavi Center returning a set of my season tickets for a cancelled performance and the woman at the box office said she'd put it back on the card I'd originally charged the tickets on. I went home and looked at what card that was and discovered it was also a BOA card, one that I had no balance on. This is a card I've held since 1995 with MBNA. I called the 800 number and found that they had closed the account and another one too. I'm terrified to look at my credit score. I do have debt but now it looks like it's much worse than it was. I never paid late, always paid more than the minimum. I have a secure job. I have been looking at buying a house because it would actually be cheaper than renting. They've ruined my future. They were so rude and the multitude of people I spoke with said ridiculous things. I can't believe this has happened to me. It's just criminal.
Has anyone complained to the BOA corporate office?!! I have not been able to find anyone at BOA, 1) just with a little of professionalism 2) with the same information that the previous representative I spoke to had.
I even spoke to a Risk department "Supervisor" after holding for 75 minutes (i believe they put you on hold so long, hoping you will hang up) that she was only able to see certain information from a certain date.
I am so sickened with this company!!! I was only a customer for literally 4 weeks before they closed my account and still to this day will not send me a bankstatement of the activity or even give me a straight answer or even the same answer as the other previous representatives I have spoken to at BOA!
Furthermore, Shantay, this Risk representative at 877-240-6886 who was the rudest person I have ever spoken to over the phone! She had no care in the world who I was or what I needed. She even hung up on me and when I by miracle got her the second time transferred me to an overseas division that had nothing to do with my account!
Come to think of it every single representative I have spoken to in the Risk Department has been rude!
I need and feel that this needs to be rectified. We the American people are paying for these bailouts! and get black slashed by these same companies receiving this help! I really need to know where and to whom to place these complaints to have something done. it is getting our of hand
I am sorry

You do not need to give me your phone if you don't like to. I just want to get to the bottom of this. Soooooo feel free to email me I have already contacted legal and the more people people I can get to them the better my chances are to get something done. Funny but today I got a letter stating that BOA are now reviewing my account for renewal and they want my employer info, years with company, Salary, address, s.s. # date of birth Mothers maiden name home and business phone. THey already have all this info on file and I need not sign the document nor does it state weather or not the information is correct. You have to love their disorganization.
Again I state if you have had your credit terminated with no advance notice what's so ever and you pay your bills please contact me at . If you see any other blogs/ websites / people with the same problem please direct me to them or send them my way.
Stolen airmile points. When they closed my account with no notice they also kept my airmiles that I accumulated and had not used. After many calls they were able to transfer some of my points so they tell me in increments of 500 but will not transfer all my points. Go figure
