Bibliography of Translations
Bibliography of Translations from the Chinese Buddhist Canon into Western
Languages.
Last updated:
This is a working bibliography of translations of Chinese Buddhist texts from the
edition of the canon. Some translations of extra-canonical Chinese Buddhist texts
are included
(see the end of the list).
“Western languages” means in principle every European language, but information on
translation into Eastern European languages is woefully lacking. A bibliography of
translations
into Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Mongolian or modern Chinese, though of course desirable,
even attempted. For translations into Manchu see the .
If you can spare the time, please browse through your bibliographies and add missing
translations. Feel free to contribute to make this tool as comprehensive as possible.
Credit for much of the initial bibliographical information goes to Peter Pfandt (Mahāyāna
Texts translated into Western Languages. Bonn: Brill, 1986) on whose meticulous research
entries are based. Also incorporated is material from: Inada, Kenneth: Guide to Buddhist
Philosophy. Boston, MA:
Hall (1985), Reynolds, Frank: Guide to Buddhist Religion. Boston, MA: Hall (1981),
as well as
from the , National Taiwan University. For more bibliographies please refer to
more information on the texts, Charles Muller maintains a .
Since this list went online in 2001 contributions were made by: Christoph Anderl,
Baolian 寶蓮, Robert Buswell, Huaiyu Chen, Dhammadinnā, Bart Dessein, Michael Dorfman,
Ronan Farrell, Sophie Florence, Attila Fodi, Joachim Gentz, Rolf Giebel, Douglas Gildow,
Eric Greene, Ann Heirman, Alexander Ong Hsu, Jamie

Iain Sinclair, ?raddhāpa, Brenton Sullivan, Stefania Travagnin, Daniel Tuzzeo, Joseph
Walser, Charles Willeman, Stuart Young,
Zhu Feng 朱峰, Harumi
Ziegler. Doug Gildow, Wolfgang Erb, and Michael Radich each contributed more than
30 entries. Charles
Muller improved the mark-up and provided corrections (June 2014), Wolfgang Erb provided
the nifty visualization tool that allows browsing the translations according to Taishō
category (Nov 2014). I am grateful for this support.
