The city of Wuxi in Jiangsu province is proving to be a commercial leader in the region, with more than 2,000 business start-ups and subsidy grants worth 13.2 million yuan ($2 million), in the past 12 months.
Looking back to the previous year, Wuxi has been improving its economic vitality with an atmosphere of innovation and entrepreneurship, with monthly innovation project road shows and quarterly project reviews.
In December, 2015, the city hosted an entrepreneurship competition which saw 15 outstanding projects win funding of 100,000, 200,000 and 300,000 yuan.
"The 300,000 yuan bonus really gives us strong support in technology R D and business operation," said Ding Yu, who started his business in Wuxi New District (WND) Internet of Things (IOT) Industrial Park and had just led his team to win the first prize, adding "We are now more confident to find a place in the market with our invention patent and the government's help."
Statistics show that last year is the first time the number of business starters applying for entrepreneurship subsidies topped 2,000, up 20 percent from 2014. The government has introduced policies providing start-ups with rent subsidies and support in financing and production expansion totaling 13.2 million yuan.

Every year, more than 1,000 university graduates choose to start a business in Wuxi. To reduce financial stress and create a sound environment for these young bloods, the government offered 6.2 million yuan ($1 million) in subsidies to 40 entrepreneurship projects with 1,939 university start-ups benefiting from local policies, producing 193 newly registered university entrepreneurship companies covering fields of IOT, mobile internet, new material, intelligent equipment, industrial design and cultural innovation.
At present, the city has 10 provincial entrepreneurship bases and three provincial training bases. Innovative areas have sprung up where business starters can work together to exchange ideas and receive a one-stop-service including business registration, project design and brand design. In 2015, 26 newly-added innovative areas brought in 200 entrepreneurship projects.
The wave of entrepreneurship not only being harnessed by young people, it's also becoming popular with those middle-aged, as well as local farmers.
Gong Lihong, from a small town of Wuxi, started her agricultural technology company upon graduation. She acquired 2,500 mu of farmland to grow green vegetables and health care medicine, packaged products with automatic equipment, and opened her own online sales channel. Now, the company's annual turnover has reached 50 million yuan. Many of the company's older staff receive a monthly income of more than 2,400 yuan.
An innovative department is built near Jiangnan University in the city of Wuxi, Jiangsu province in November to offer living and working space to young entrepreneurs. []
Entrepreneurship is a source of increasing employment, with one start-up creating seven jobs on average, said an official of the city's bureau of human resources and social security. According to the bureau, the city helped 10,758 people started their businesses last year which created jobs for nearly 50,000 people.
In the era of mass innovation and entrepreneurship, the new generation is nurturing infinite creativity that blends with the Wuxi's industrial history foundation, adding another yet another string to its economic bow.
